Outcrossing Rate in Row Ratio of Restorer and Cms Lines for Hybrid Rice Seed Production.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was undertaken in the farmers field at Muktagacha, Mymensingh during the period of boro season 2005-06 to study the influence of row ratio of restorer (R) and Cytoplasmic Male Sterility (CMS) lines (A) on seed production hybrid rice Heera (99-5). The experiment was comprised with five row ratios (R: A) viz; 2:8, 2:10, 2:12, 2:14 and 2:16. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Results indicated that hybrid rice Heera (99-5) produced the highest seed yield (2.5 t/ha) with the row ratio of 2:14 and the lowest seed yield (1.9 t/ha) was produced from row ratio of 2:8. The highest seed yield was the consequence of highest number of grains panicle^-1 and fertility index. On the other hand, the lowest seed yield 2:8 which was the outcome of minimum number of bearing tillers hill^-1, number of grains panicle^-1 and fertility index.

Objectives:

To find out the proper row ratio of restorer and CMS lines for maximizing seed yield of hybrid rice Heera (99-5).

Methodology:

This study was undertaken in the farmer’s field at Muktagacha, Mymensingh during the period of boro season 2005-06. Planting material A and R lines have been and in trial developed in Hubei Provincial Seed Group, China rice hybrid cultivar named 99-5, which is marketed in Bangladesh as a rice hybrid Heera. The spacing maintained for R-R, R-A and A-A lines 40 cm, 20 cm 13.3 cm, respectively.To accommodate varying number of rows, plot size was also varied accordingly. Row directions were perpendicular to wind direction. To ensure easy dispersal of pollen and higher cross pollination of panicles of CMS plant, flag leaf clipping is very important. At booting stage flag leaf blades were cut with the help of a sickle in such a way that two third of the flag leaf were removed.
