Optimization of Seedling Number for Breeder Seed Production of Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur to optimize the seedling number for breeder seed production of rice. For this study, BR11, BR23, BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan41 were transplanted in T.Aman (2006-07) and BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 in Boro (2006-07) seasons with three treatments viz. single seedling per hill (T₁), double seedlings per hill (T₂) and triple seedlings per hill (T₃). Total tiller number per hill, effective tiller number per hill, seed moisture percentage at harvest, grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight (g), spotted grain (%) and yield per plant (g) were studied. Significant differences among the varieties were observed for spotted grain (%) and yield per hill (g) during T. Aman and for all characters during Boro seasons, respectively. However, during T. Aman season, single seedling per hill showed no significant difference from double seedlings per hill or triple seedlings per hill, irrespective of variety except for seed moisture percent at harvest and grain per panicle. During Boro season, except yield, single seedling per hill showed no significant difference for all the characters from double seedlings per hill or triple seedlings per hill, irrespective of variety except for total tiller number (18.47) and grain per panicle (103.17) in BRRI dahn29. It is apparent that single seedlings per hill reduced grain spotting.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of seedling number hill^-1 on yield and grain quality of breeder seed of rice.
To determine the suitable number of seedlings hill^-1 for obtaining higher yield and quality of rice.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during T.Aman 2006-07 and Boro 2006-7 seasons at BRRI farm to study the effect of seedling number on breeder seed of rice. For this, BR11, BR23, BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan41 were grown during T.Aman 2006-07 and BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 in Boro 2006-07 seasons, with a spacing of 20 cm between both the rows and plants, in a split plot design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2.8 m x 1.2 m and 3.8 x 1.2 m, respectively and treatments were single seedling per hill (T₁), double seedlings per hill (T₂) and triple seedlings per hill (T₃). Fertilizers were applied @ 80:60:40 kg/ha NPK in T. Aman and @ 100:60:40 kg/ha NPK in Boro seasons along with 70 kg/ha gypsum and 10 kg/ha zink sulphate. All 100 kg TSP, 80 kg MoP, 70 kg gypsum and 10 kg zinc sulphate per ha were applied at the time of final land preparation in both the seasons. Full protections were taken against disease, weed and insect pest. Urea was applied as top dressing in three splits during tillering, panicle initiation and flowering stages. Three sample plants for each treatment were randomly selected. Data were recorded on total tiller number per hill, effective tiller number per hill, seed moisture percentage at harvest, grains per panicle, 1000 grain weight (g), spotted grain (%) and yield per plant (g). The grain characters were analyzed for variance to determine the effect of seedling number on breeder seed quality and yield.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest spotted grain percentages were observed for triple seedlings per hill and the lowest for single seedlings per hill in most of the rice varieties.
