Seed Dormancy of Modern Aman Rice Varieties of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Dormancy duration (period required for 80% seed germination) was estimated in 18 Transplanted Aman (TA) rice varieties developed by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). The rice seeds were harvested at physiological maturity, well dried and stored in drum at room temperature18-20ºC and tested for germination at every 15 days interval. The results indicated that the variety BRRI dhan44 broke dormancy 45 days after maturity and recorded more than 81% germination. The varieties BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32 and BRRI dhan46 took 60 days to broke dormancy with 85, 84 and 84% germination, respectively. The varieties BR11, BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan40 recorded 86.75, 86 and 84.00% germination after 75 days of maturity. The dormancy period of BR10, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan39 and BRRI dhan41 was 90 days and at the same time germination was recorded 87.25, 93.50, 85.50 and 87.75% respectively. The strongest dormancy was observed in case of varieties Nizersail, BR5, BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan37 and BRRI dhan38 which took more than 105 days to overcome the dormancy with 97.25, 88.75, 92.00, 90.00, 86.00, 93.75 and 92.75% germination, respectively.

Objectives:

The present investigation was taken up with 18 Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) released T. Aman varieties to estimate the dormancy duration.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Genetic Resources and Seed Division (GRSD) of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur. Breeder seeds of eighteen (18) T. Aman rice varieties were grown during T. Aman season in 2007-08. At maturity, the plots were harvested at 20-25% grain moisture content and the panicles were threshed mechanically to avoid any injury to the seeds. Cleaned and graded seeds were then dried to 10-12% moisture content drying 3-4 hours daily at 30-35ºC and stored at 18-20ºC and 50-60% RH in the storage of the Breeder Seed Unit. Seeds were used to assess dormancy duration based on germination Test (ISTA, 1996). Seed dormancy determined by germination of intact seeds in 9 cm dia petridish with What man # 1 filter paper and moistened with distilled water, in a germinator maintained at 30ºC constant temperature and 99% relative humidity. The experiment was conducted in RCBD with 4 replications having 100 seeds per replication. Based on previous study Oryza sativa seeds gave the best germination at this temperature (Hall, 1996 and Ellis et al., 1983). Germination counts were taken on the fifteen day after the seeds were placed on the moist paper and germination was scored as the emergence of the radical. The petridishes were opened once a day to check the moisture level and to facilitate air movement. Germination test was done twice monthly to assess dormancy duration till reach 80% germination.

Achievement/Findings:

From the study it may be concluded that the seeds of Aman rice varieties had high dormancy than Aus and Boro rice varieties. Therefore, estimation of dormancy duration for different rice varieties is worthwhile. Several modern varieties were identified to have good seed dormancy. So, careful varietals selection should be done for risk areas.
