An experiment was conducted during the period of 19 October, 2008 to 16 January, 2009 to evaluate the wheat seed quality under different storage condition i.e. tin, poly bag and gunny bag in the laboratory of Seed Technology Unit, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur.Quality was assessed in laboratory in terms of percent germination, germination rate, germination index and coefficient of velocity. After initial moisture (%) assessment seed were kept in tin, polythene bag and gunny bag to observe the deterioration pattern. Among the three containers, seeds of gunny bag absorbed more moisture from surrounding atmosphere and increased from 13.65 to 14.98%. The germination percentage of seed was maximum (82.00%) in tin container and minimum (76.00%) in gunny bag where as initial germination percentage was 87%. Germination rate was also deteriorated sharply in gunny bag. The initial germination rate of the seed was 80. The seed germination rate was maximum (75.4) in tin container and minimum (70.20) in gunny bag. Seed germination index was also maximum (2.10) in tin container and minimum (1.84) in gunny bag where as initial was 2.37. The seed deterioration rate was lowest in tin container and had the highest seedling vigor than the other containers. Biotic factor was not observed in the seeds during storage period.

Seeds were kept in three types of container such as tin pot, poly bag and gunny bag and stored at room from 19 October 2008 to 16 January, 2009. Seed were collected from the local market to conduct the experiment. Collected seeds were tested in terms of moisture content, germination and seedling vigour in the Seed Technology Unit of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University. Moisture content was determined by using oven dry method. From each container 10 g of seeds were taken and poured in a small container with cover and kept in an oven maintained at 130-133OC for 2 hours. Similar procedure was performed every month from beginning of storage. The moisture content of seeds (wet basis) was determined by the following formula (Anonymous, 1999).For germination test one hundred seeds of each container were placed in petridish containing blotter paper soaked with distilled water. The experimental design was laid out in the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four replications. Similar procedures were performed with fifteen days interval up to 90 days. The petridish were placed in room temperature for eight days for germination. Seedlings were counted every day up to the completion of germination. Germination percentage was calculated using the following formula (Krishnasamy and Seshu, 1990). Germination rate (GR) was calculated from a daily count of germinated seeds until it reached a constant value, using the following formula given by Maguire (1962).Germination index (GI) was calculated using the following formula given by Scott et al. (1984).  The coefficient of velocity (CV) was calculated using the following formula given also by Scott et al. (1984). Biotic factors like insects and pathogen was not observed during the storage period in any containers. The observed results were analyzed using the MSTAT   and co-efficient of variance done by LSD.

The initial moisture content of seeds in different containers’ seeds was similar (11.98%) but it was increased with increasing storage time. The rate of absorbance was higher in gunny bag because of gunny bag was not air tight container but tin and polythene bag were moisture proof. The initial germination percentage of different containers’ seeds was 87 % and it was declined significantly during storage. The decline rate was higher in seeds of gunny bag (12.25%). Germination indices of wheat seeds varied significantly due to different moisture content of different containers. The germination rate were better in seeds of tin (75.4) and polythene bag (74.20) compared to that of gunny bag (70.20). Seed germination index was also lowest (1.84) and coefficient of germination was   height (41.30) at the end of storage in gunny bag compared to other containers. With the finding of the above experiment and other available literatures, it is evident that sealed container (tin pot) and safe (below 12 %) moisture level is the best for the purpose of wheat seed storage.
