Correlation and Path Analysis of Different Traits in Various Component Lines of Hybrid Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to correlation and path analysis of different traits in various component lines of hybrid rice at the experimental farm, Department of Genetics and plant Breeding, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur during July to December 2009. In cytoplasmic male sterile lines, the correlation and path coefficient showed that plant height, days to maturity, number of primary branches per panicle and number of secondary branches per panicle were the most important yield contributing characters because those showed highly significant positive correlation and positive direct and indirect effect on yield. In maintainer lines, the correlation and path coefficient analysis showed that plant height and number of secondary branches per panicle were the most important yield contributing characters because they showed highly significant positive correlation and positive direct and indirect effect on yield.

Objectives:

To determine which of these characters could be used for high rice grain yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted by using twenty nine component lines for development of hybrid rice, where eight Cytoplasmic Male Sterile (CMS/A). Path coefficient analysis was done according to the procedure employed by Dewey and Lu (1955) also quoted in Singh and Chaudhury (1985), using phenotypic correlation coefficient values. In path analysis, correlation coefficients between yield and yield contributing characters on grain yield per hectare. Correlation coefficient were further partitioned into components of direct and indirect effects by path coefficient analysis originally developed by Wright (1921) and later described by Dewey and Lu (1959).

Achievement/Findings:

The correlation and path coefficient anal showed that panicle length, number of secondary branches per panicle and number of filled grain per panicle were the most important yield contributing characters because they showed highly significant positive correlation and positive direct and indirect effect on yield.
