Determination of Different Chemicals as Alternative Source of Ga3 on Hybrid Rice Seed Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Alternative source of GA₃ is very important. GA₃ is a costly item. Not available in local market. It is mainly imported from China. Unavailability of GA₃ sometimes create problem for hybrid rice seed production. Delayed application of GA₃ is totally undesirable because it does not work that time. Panicle exertion of CMS lines, plant height adjustment and enhance stigma receptivity is the main function of GA₃. This function is dependable on time of application with proper dose. So, this experiment was conducted to determine alternative sources of GA₃to minimize cost involvement in hybrid rice seed production

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate alternative chemicals of GA3 with proper dose and time of application.

Methodology:

One CMS line (IR58025A) along with its restorer (BR827R) of BRRI hybrid dhan1 was grown as parental materials. Restorer was sown in three different date at five days interval and CMS line was sown along with second set of its respective R line. After ten days, fertilizers @ 7 gm, 4 gm and 7 gm urea, TSP and MP, respectively were applied in 1 m² area of seed bed. Twenty-one day old seedlings were transplanted in a 20 m² plot at a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm with 2:8 ratios to A and R line using RCB design with 3 replications. Chemicals viz.GA₃ (60 ppm ) 2,4-D (4 ppm) and Glycine (40 ppm) per hectare were applied at 5%, 15-20% and 35-40% flowering stages as treatments and no chemical was used incase of control. Twelve combinations of treatment were done as GA₃ concentrations vs. flowering stages. Fertilizers @ 150:100:70:60:10 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc were applied. Intercultural operations, irrigation, rouging, and supplementary pollination were performed when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Higher seed yield (556 kg/ha) was obtained from applying GA₃ at 15-20% and 35-40% flowering stages. None of the alternative sources function better than GA₃
