Nucleus seed production is a routine work of any promising hybrid combination. Firstly crossing block is made to make flowering synchronization for paired crossing. First season A, B & R lines of a promising combination is sown in block wise to ensure pair crossing. The harvested seed is evaluated in the following season making two staggered sets maintaining 21 days gap between two sets. In both sets corresponding male parents are transplanted side by side and at flowering stage evaluate their pollen sterility status. Based on pollen sterility or fertility status, the pair which maintain actual sterility or fertility keep them free for open pollination with corresponding male parents. The pair which is not appropriate discarded them. Proper isolation is maintained by putitng barrier

To initiate crossing program for nucleus seed production

CMS line (BRRIIA) along with its maintainer (B line) and restorer (BR168R) was grown as parental materials. All three lines were sown in 3 different date at 7 days intervals for better crossing and more F1 seeds. Thirty to thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm in 5 m2 of plot. Fertilizers @ 270:130:120:70:10 kg/ha Urea-TSP-MP-Gypsum-Zinc sulphate were applied. Intercultural operations, irrigation, rouging, were performed when necessary.
