Development of Planting Technique of Sal (shorea Robusta)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted Charaljani and Charkai Research Stations of BFRI with the objectives to develop suitable planting technique of Sal and to enrich the degraded Sal forest through aided regeneration. During the study period, it was found that there is no significant difference in the survival and growth performance of the seedlings for different planting materials (21.0-36.0% survival after 3 years, 78.0-87.0% after 2 years and73.0-86.0% after 1 year of plantation). No significant difference was found in the survival of the seedlings at two locations. However, a significant difference in the growth of the seedlings were observed in two locations (2.2m-2.4m at Charaljani and 0.4-0.5m at Charkai after 3 years; 1.2-1.6m at Charaljani and 0.4-0.6 at Charkai after 2 years, and 0.8-1.0m at Charaljani and 0.3-0.4m at Charkai after one year of plantation). However, considering survivability and growth performance of seedlings, among the three types of planting materials, stump planting and direct seed sowing are the suitable for plantation in the field. Beside, these planting materials are cost effective and easy to carry.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Charkai Research Station and Raised 2000 seedlings and established 1.0 ha experimental plantations by seedlings, stumps and direct seed sowing in thallis. During the study period, maintained 6.0 ha experimental plantations through weeding at Charaljani and Charkai Research Stations of BFRI. It is a on-going project, which started in 2010 and will continue upto 2015.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering survivability and growth performance of seedlings, among the three types of planting materials, stump planting and direct seed sowing are the suitable for plantation in the field. Beside, these planting materials are cost effective and easy to carry.
