Back Cross Nursery During T Aman Season 2007

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Back cross nursery is the main source of conversion nursery of a suspected maintainer line. Pollen fertility status is regularly monitored in this nursery. The entries which expressed complete sterility with whole plants of a entry is regarded as perfect back cross entries along with other desirable agronomic and floral traits. After BC6 generations a back cross entry shifted to CMS maintenance and evaluation nursery as a new CMS lines with the back ground of its corresponding maintainer line. Then it is called new CMSA and male parent as CMSB line.

Objectives:

Developing CMS lines from identified maintainer by back crossing.

Methodology:

Materials: 1BC₅, 19 BC₄, 38BC₂, and 1 BC₁ generation. Successive back cross progenies ranging from BC₁-BC₅ were grown along with their corresponding suspected maintainer lines. Pollen fertility of each of the plant in a line was evaluated. Completely sterile plants were immediately crossed with its corresponding male parents and the BC-generation was advanced. Adequate soil fertility was ensured by applying additional quantities of Urea- TSP-MP- Gypsum- ZnSO₄@ 150:100:70:60:10 kg/ha, respectively. Total TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnSO₄were applied in final land preparation. Total Urea was applied in four installments, 1/4 th at final land preparation, 1/4 th at 15-20 days after transplanting (DAT), 1/4 th at 35-40 DAT and the rest before panicle initiation (PI) stage. Irrigation and weed management was done when necessary

Achievement/Findings:

BC₅, BC₄ and BC₂generations were stable for pollen sterility and advanced for next generation. Only completely sterile plants were selected for generation advancement. BC1 generation was shown fertility problem and decided not to make generation advancement.
