Screening Parental Lines for Floral Traits Influencing Out Crossing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Floral traits of CMS lines and its corresponding maintainer lines are very important to design a CMS line multiplication program. Good floral traits like panicle exertion rate (PER), stigma exertion rate (SER), out crossing rate (OCR) is the main point consider for CMS line multiplication. Good out crossing potential CMS line has all the characters available and able to produce good seed while multiplication. On the other hand, restorer line with good stigma exertion, high pollen load ensure good seed yield while seed production with a particular CMS line. So, knowledge about floral characteristics is very much essential for selection parental lines for seed multiplication and hybrid seed production. Among the tested CMS lines maximum growth duration was observed in BRRI9 A/B followed by IR58025 A/B. Highest numbers of tiller/hill, highest angle of floret opening, filament length, anther length, anther breadth, stigma length, stigma breadth and style length were observed from BRRI9A/B followed by IR 68888 A/B and IR 73328 A/B. BRRI9A also showed better PER, SER, OCR and sterility. Further more, BRRI 9B also produced higher yield. Among the 42 tested restorer lines 7 were selected of which BRRI 10R showed lower growth duration, higher tiller number, panicle length, number of spikelet/ panicle, spikelet fertility and yield/ plant followed by BRRI11R, BRRI12R and IR 73720-44-2-3-1 R . BRRI 10R also showed higher angle of floret opening, filament length, anther length, anther breadth, stigma length, and stigma breadth , style length and number of pollen/ focus followed by BRRI12R, BRRI11R and IR 73720-44-2-3-1 R.

Objectives:

To identify suitable A, B & R lines for floral traits influencing outcrossing

Methodology:

Thirty (30) days old seedling of 11 CMSA, 11 maintainer (B) & 42 restorer (R) lines were transplanted in a 2 m²plot using CRD with the spacing of 20 cm x 20 cm. Fertilizer @ 270:130:110:70:10 kg/ha of urea- TSP-MP- Gypsum- ZnSo₄were applied. Crop management practices were done when it was required.
