Study on the Development of Oil Palm (elaeis Guineensis) Cultivation in Bangladesh (on-going)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Raised 500 seedlings at Charkai Research Stations during the study period. Germination of oil palm seeds was started after 32 days of seed sowing and completed within 58 days at nursery. The highest seed germination percentage was 67.0 and seedlings attained a height of 25.4cm within six months.Collected survival and growth data twice in a year. The data revealed that there is no significant difference in survival and growth of the seedlings due to spacing. However, variation was found regarding growth and survival of the seedlings in three sites at different ages of plantations. The highest survival of seedlings was found at Charkai (91.0-99.0%) and lowest at Keochia (77.0-70.0%) of one year age of plantation but it was 61.0-87.0% at the age of two years plantation at Keochia. At the three years age of plantation, 46.0-53.0% and 62.0-65.0% seedlings were survived at Keochia and Charaljani. The height of the seedlings of three years age of plantation was found highest at Charaljani (3.0 -3.1m) and lowest at Keochia (0.8-1.2m). Lowest survival and height of the seedlings at Keochia is due to firing, attack of procupine and wild boar, etc. Finally, an appropriate nursery technique was developed for raising seedlings.

Objectives:

To determine present status of oil palm plantation in Bangladesh.
To standardize nursery raising technique and management.
To standardize plantation (spacing) and management technique of oil palm. d) To study the reproductive biology of oil palm in plantations of Bangladesh.
To introduce and test the high yielding variety (HYV) of oil palm.

Methodology:

This is an on-going project. The study was conducted at three different locations (Keochia, Charaljani and Charkai Research Stations). The project was initiated on 2010 and continued upto 2015. Status of the germination of the Oil palm was recorded. Healthy seedling with height and survived status was monitored. Raised 1.5 ha experimental plantation with three spacing (viz. 5.0m x 5.0m, 6.0m x 6.0m, and 7.0m x 7.0m) with RCBD design at Charkai Research Station. Maintained 13.5 ha experimental plantations through watering during dry season and weeding at Charkai Research Station
