Highest yield of T. Aman was 3.82t/ha with one supplemental irrigation and in Boro season 6.62 t/ha in treatment T3 (irrigation after 3 days of disappearing of 5–7 cm water) in cropping system P1 (T. Aman-Boro-Fallow). Similarly highest yield of T. Aman, Wheat and Mungbean were found respectively 2.84 t/ha with one supplemental irrigation, 3.47 t/ha with treatment T3 (three irrigation) and 0.66 t/ha with two irrigation in cropping system P2 (T. Aman-Wheat-Mungbean). Again highest yield of T. Aman, potato and Mungbean were found 3.35 t/ha with one supplemental irrigation, 29.78 t/ha with treatment T3 (three irrigation) and 1.17 t/ha with one irrigation respectively in cropping system P3 (T. Aman-Potato-Mungbean). A significant variation in net return was observed among different crop sequences /cropping system. Maximum net return (278369) was recorded in T. Aman – Potato – Mungbean crop sequence, followed by T. Aman – Boro– fellow (133886), and T. Aman – Wheat- Mungbean (121336). Among the different levels of irrigation, significantly higher net profit was recorded with maximum frequency of irrigation.Among the three crop sequence, water productivity was maximum (19.0 kg/ha-mm) in T. Aman- Potato- Mungbean. Also maximum year round yield equivalent in terms of rice (23.14 t/ha) and net return (Tk 278369) was recorded in T. Aman- Potato-Mungbean crop sequence.

  Crop-Soil-Water Management
  Water productivity

i)     To quantify the amount of water required for rice based cropping system; and

ii)    To determine the productivity and profitability of the cropping system.

The field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur during 2006-07. The treatment comprised levels of irrigation and three rice based crop sequences, laid out in Split plot design with crop sequences in plot and irrigation in sub plot, replicated 3 times. Different rice based crop sequences/cropping system were: P1= T. Aman – Boro – Fallow , P2 = T. Aman – Wheat – Mungbean , and P3 = T. Aman – Potato – Mungbean. Irrigation treatments for T aman were follows:T1 = Rainfed ,T2 = One irrigation at vegetative and one in reproductive stage and T3 = One irrigation at vegetative and two in reproductive stage. For boro season were T1 = Irrigation (5-7cm) when water is 15 cm below soil surface, T2 = Irrigation (5-7cm) when water is 30 cm below soil surface and T3 = Irrigation after 3 days of disappearing standing water. For wheat, T1 = One irrigation (17 – 21 DAS), T2 = Two irrigation (17- 21 DAS + 55 – 60 DAS) and T3 = Three irrigation (17- 21 DAS + 55 – 60 DAS +70 – 75 DAS). For Potato, T1 = One irrigation (20 – 25 DAS), T2 = Two irrigation (20- 25 DAS + 40 – 45 DAS) and T3 = Three irrigation (20- 25 DAS + 40 – 45 DAS +60 – 65 DAS). For Mungbean: T1= Rainfed, T2= One irrigation and T3= Two irrigations. Recommended doses of fertilizers were applied as per the crops. A fertilizer dose of 150 + 100 + 70 + 33 + 50 and 220 + 120 + 85+ 28+ 50 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate were used for T. Aman and Boro crop respectively. Again a fertilizer dose of 220 + 180 + 50 +120, 250 +150 + 250 + 120 + 8 + 10 and 50 + 85 +35 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate, Boron (Potato) were used  for Wheat, Potato and Mungbean respectively.
