Adaptation and Adoption of Potassium Fertilizer Technology in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four planned experiments and eighteen demonstrations were conducted at Gazipur (AEZ28, madhupur tract), Dinajpur (AEZ 1), Thakurgaon (AEZ 1), Panchagorh (AEZ 1) in T. Aman 2005 and Boro 2006 to find out the appropriate dose of K fertilizer and to create awareness among the farmers to use K fertilizer. In planned experiments six K treatments viz. K control (K₀), recycling of crop residues without K fertilizer (K₀ + CR), 33 kg K/ha, 50 kg K/ha, 66 kg K/ha and farmers practice of K and soil test based K. Incorporation of crop residue into soil produced statistically identical yield of both grain and straw to that obtained with K fertilizer indicating the crop residue was equally effective as K fertilizer to increase rice and wheat yield. Soil test based K fertilization produced higher grain yield of rice and wheat than those of farmers practice and K control. The contribution of applied K fertilizer was found more prominent in wheat than that of rice and in dry season rice compared to wet season rice.

Methodology:

Four planned experiments and eighteen demonstrations were conducted at Gazipur (AEZ28, madhupur tract), Dinajpur (AEZ 1), Thakurgaon (AEZ 1), Panchagorh (AEZ 1) in T. Aman 2005 and Boro 2006. In planned experiments six K treatments viz. K control (K₀), recycling of crop residues without K fertilizer (K₀ + CR), 33 kg K/ha, 50 kg K/ha, 66 kg K/ha and farmers practice of K and soil test based K. The STB flat doses of NPS Zn were applied in the all plots during final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in three splits as 34% at basal, 33% at 25 DAT and rest 33% at 5-7 days before PI stage. At (K₀ + CR) treatment crop residue of previous crop were incorporated into soil through ploughing at 10-15 days before transplanting. At maturity the crop was harvested manually from 5 m² area at 15 cm above ground. However, 16 hills from each plot were harvested at ground level for straw yield data. Grain yield was recorded at 14% moisture content and straw yield as oven dry basis.

Achievement/Findings:

Incorporation of crop residue into soil produced statistically identical yield of both grain and straw to that obtained with K fertilizer indicating the crop residue was equally effective as K fertilizer to increase rice and wheat yield. In farmer’s field demonstrations, K fertilizer positively influenced the yield contributing parameters as well as grain and straw yield. STB based K fertilizer dose significantly increased grain yield over farmers K dose. At Gazipur site, it was observed that application of K increased grain yield ranged from 7.9 to 12.8% over K control plot and also 0.5 to 4.5 % over farmers K dose in T Aman. On the other hand, in Boro season it was 8.5 to 20% over K control plot and also 3.8% over farmer’s K dose. At AEZ 1, application of rice straw increased rice yield and wheat straw increased wheat yield over control and farmers practice. Application of K increased grain yield ranged from 0.9 to 9.4% over farmers K dose in T. Aman season. But in wheat K fertilizer application increased yield ranged from 12.88 to 42.06% over K control plot and 6.8 to 25.9% over farmers K dose. However, K response was more in sandy loam soils (AEZ 1) than in clay loam soil (AEZ 28).
