Determination of Suitable Row Ratio and Spacing for Increasing Seed Yield in Hybrid Rice Seed Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out at BRRI Gazipur in Boro season during 2006-2007. The objective of this study was to find out the optimum row ratio and spacing for hybrid rice seed production.The experiment was conducted using one promising A line (BRRI1A) along with its restorers (BR168R). Restorers were sown in three different date at five days interval and CMS line was sown along with second set of its respective R line. Plant spacing of 20 x15 cm with 20:10 ratio gave the highest seed yield (2.71 t/ha)

Objectives:

To find out the optimum row ratio and spacing for hybrid rice seed production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted using one promising A line (BRRI1A) along with its restorers (BR168R). Restorers were sown in three different date at five days interval and CMS line was sown along with second set of its respective R line. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 15 x 15 cm, 20 cm x 15 cm, and 20 x 20 cm with 2:8, 2:10, 2:12 and 2:14 ratio to A and R line using RCB design with 3 replications. Fertilizers @270:130:120:70:10 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied. Intercultural operations, irrigation, rouging, GA₃ application and supplementary pollination were performed when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Planting spacing of 20 cm x15 cm with 2:10 row ratio gave the highest seed yield (2.71 t/ha). Highest out crossing rate was found in 2:8 ratios with 20 cm x15 cm spacing followed by 2:10 ratio with 20 cm x 15 cm spacing.
