Yield and Yield Contributing Characters of Five Guava Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out with five guava varieties, namely Allahabad, Kanchannagar, Kazi Piara, Mukundapuri and Swarupkathi during 1984-1986. Kazi Piara produced the maximum number of fruits in winter season and had the highest yield/plant. Allahabad produced the highest number of fruits in rainy season. The fruits of Kazi Piara were heavier in weight than the fruits of other varieties in both the seasons. In three years experimentation; Kazi Piara gave the highest yield of 71.14 kg which was followed by Allahabad (65.48kg), Kanchannagar (58.37), Swarupkathi (57.81) and Mukundapuri (45.66). Considering the yield and yield contributing characters, the variety Kazi Piara was found superior to all other varieties under study.

Objectives:

2. To undertake comparative study among the five guava varieties which includes well-known local varieties

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out in the field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute at Joydebpur during 1984-1986. One-year old seedlings were planted in July 1981 at 4 m X 4 m spacing in completely randomized design with 5 replications. ?At the start of the present investigation, all the plants reached the age of three. Manures and fertilizers were applied twice in a year in March and September. Pruning was done every year in each variety in the month of September/October to have proper shape of plants, and irrigation was given during the dry season as necessary. About 70 percent fruits were thinned in Kazi Piara when the fruits weighted 20 g each on eye estimation. This was done since fruit thinning is a recommended practice in Kazi Piara. Malathion was sprayed @ lml/litre water against fruit. borer just after fruit setting and Dithane M-45 was sprayed twice @ 2m1/litre water when the fruits were pea-sized and 15 days after 1st application against anthracnose disease of guava. Data on number of primary branches, plant height, base girth, spread of canopy (North-South x East-West), shoot growth, leaf shape, size, foliage density, time of flowering and harvesting,days from flower bud emergence to flower opening and flowering to harvesting, number of fruits/plant, mean weight of fruits and yield/plant were recorded. The number of days from flowering to fruit maturity and flower bud emergence to flower opening were recorded in the rainy season only. Since the plants were small these were not allowed to bear fruits in the winter season in 1984.

Achievement/Findings:

The fruits of Kazi Piara were heavier in weight than the fruits of other varieties in both winter and summer seasons. During the three years (1985-I986), Kazi Piara gave the highest yield followed by Allahabad, Kanchannagar, Swarupkathi and Mukundapuri. Considering the yield and yield contributing characters, the variety Kazi Piara was found to be superior than others in consideration of strong base girth, small plant stature, attractive fruit size, availability to grow in winter, late harvesting and per plant yield.
