Hybrid Rice Material Development

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Success of hybrid rice breeding depend on available locally adaptable of parental lines. If you have good adaptable CMS, maintainer and restorer lines you can easily initiate good breeding program of hybrid rice. Searching of maintainer and restorer lines from local germplasm is the main function of hybrid rice material development program. Enhance genetic bases of parental lines through B x B and R x R crosses also generate sufficient variation that help developing diverse maintainer and restorer lines.

Objectives:

Developing CMS lines from the adaptable varieties/lines suitable for Bangladesh,
Maintenance & evaluation of exotic/locally developed CMS lines,
Selection of heterotic rice hybrids & usable parental materials.

Methodology:

Material development program consist of the following experiments- a) Source Nursery b) Test cross Nursery c) Back cross Nursery d) CMS maintenance and evaluation Nursery. Each of the individual experiments has different methodology.. Source nursery comprises of collected collected locally and exotic advance lines, available best CMS lines for that season and available restorer lines. Crossing is made between CMS with advance lines that is evaluated in Test cross nursery for maintainer and restorer search and CMS with restorer line crosses is evaluated as experimental hybrids. Achievement/Findings:

Locally adaptable parental lines are generated. The hybrid developed using this parental lines having good adaptability, yield potentiality as well as resistant to adverse situation. So, material development program is the heart of hybrid rice breeding and without it good stable hybrid rice development is not possible
