Test cross nursery is the regular work of hybrid rice material development program. In this nursery previous season made crosses were evaluated with standard check variety. The entries which are expressed complete pollen sterility male parent of this cross regarded as suspected maintainer and the entries which is expressed complete pollen fertility and possessed more that 20% yield advantage over check variety at maturity is regarded as suspected restorer. Eighty eight (88)  test crosses (F1s) were evaluated for their pollen fertility status of which 26 entries have been shown complete sterilty and they were immediately back crossed with their corresponding male parents for conversion. These 26 entries will be evaluated as BC1 generation in the next Boro season. Out of 88 entries 2 entries found apparently heterotic over parent and check in respect to yield and duration.

Test cross nursery was established with the following objectives-

1. Confirmation of maintainers and restorers from the crossed entries.

        2.  Selection of heterotic rice hybrids.

       3.  Conversion of prospective maintainers into new CMS lines.

Eighty eight (88) test crosses (F1s) along with their parents and BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI hybrid dhan2 were used as standard check variety. The test cross F1s and their respective male parents were grown side by side in a single row of 15 plants with a single seedling/ hill. Standard check variety was grown after every 20 test cross F1s. Test cross F1’s were evaluated at flowering stage for their pollen sterility. Standard fertilizer doses and cultural practices were maintained
