Fruit Characteristics, Yield Potential and Mineral Content of Plantain Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The investigation was carried out to study fruit characters, yield potential and mineral content of nine local plantain genotypes and one exotic hybrid, FHIA 03. FHIA03 gave the highest yield (18.23 kg/bunch) bearing 132.30 small , fingers (121.7 g each). Borobhagne produced the second heaviest bunch (14.63 kg). Fingers of FHIA 03 required the minimum time (15 min.) for cooking. Flesh of all genotypes possesses pleasant aroma except MP002 and MP003. Among the genotypes, FHIA 03, MP015 and MP024 were better in taste when cooked as curry and meshed. The local genotypes contained more Fe than FHIA 03. FHIA 03 was considered superior to other genotypes in respect of yield and fruit quality.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield potential and fruit characteristics including cooking quality and the mineral composition of the local genotypes as compared to an exotic one.

Methodology:

The field experiment was carried out in the fruit farm and fruit characteristics were studied in the laboratory of the Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur duirng the period from October 1998 to December 1999. Dry matter and mineral compositron of fruits were determined in the Chemistry Laboratory of the Soil Science Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur. Nine local plantain genotypes and one exotic hybrid FIHA 03 collected from Belgium through INIBAP were included in this study. The local genotypes were identified in the previous years from 31 accessions collected from different areas based on shape, size and colour of fruits. The experiment was laid out in the RCBD with three replications. The suckers were planted in pits at a spacing of 1.8 m x 1.8 m. There were four plants in each unit plot of size 3.6 m x 3.6 m. Fertilizers were applied @ cowdung 10 kg, TSP 250 g, gypsum 200 g and mustard oil cake 250 g per plant during land preparation and cowdung 10 kg in pit. The plants were sidedressed with urea and MP @ 500 g and 600 g per plant, respectively, split three times at 60 days interval starting 60 days after planting. Weeding, mulching, desuckering and propping were done as and when necessary. Irrigation was done during dry period from November to March at one month interval. Insecticide was not sprayed but Knowin, a fungicide, was sprayed against Sigatoka leaf spot disease of banana. Data in respect of yield, fruit characteristics including cooking quality were recorded. Dry matter and mineral content of fruits, namely phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron were determined in the laboratory. Dry matter was determined by oven drying at 105⁰C for 24 hours. Total phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron were determined by an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer using perchloric acid digestion assay method (Yamakawa, 1992). The recorded data were analysed statistically in the method suggested by Gomez and Gomez (1984).
