Water Quality of Some Freshwater Wetlands of Greater Dhaka District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Water quality i.e., physico-chemical nature of water during the period of January 2000 to December, 2000 in six freshwater wetlands of greater Dhaka district was assessed. Total dissolved solids (TDS) of water varied from 28 mg/L to 408 mg/L. The pH of water varied from 6 to 7.73, electric conductivity (EC) from 51 to 398 us/em, chemical oxygen demand (COD) from 19.2 to 44.8 mg/L, biochemical oxygen demand (BODs) from 3.2 to 12.8 mg/L, ammoniurn-N from l.4 to 12.5 mg/L, nitrate-N from 1.4 to 5.6 mg/L, sulphur (S) from 20 to 10833 Ilg/L, phosphorus (P) from 42.5 to 1425 Ilg/L, cations- Na+ from 5400 to 74250 ug/L, K+ from 800 to 11,500 Ilg/L, Mg2+ from 120 to 844 ug/l, and Ca2+ from 2350 to 11,500 ug/L. Significant variation (at 5%) was observed in case of depth, biochemical oxygen demand (BODs) and arnmonium-N content of water only.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the seasonal changes of water quality i.e., physico-chemical nature of water of some freshwater wetlands of greater Dhaka district.

Methodology:

Six freshwater wetlands of greater Dhaka district were selected for this investigation. Investigation was done in three seasons between January and December, 2000-summer (March to May), rainy season (July to September) and winter (November to January). The physico-chemical characteristics of water were analysed by using the standard methods: Total dissolved solids (TDS) content of water were determined by gravimetric method. The pH of water was determined by using a glass electrode pH meter (Griffin pH meter, Model No. 40). Electric conductivity (EC) of water was determined by EC meter (Bonnet 1, HI3291, ATC-Conductivity Probe). The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BODs) of water were measured by using Winkler method. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N content of water were determined by using Micro-kjeldhal distillation method. The water soluble phosphorus content was determined by ascorbic acid blue colour method. The amount of water soluble sulphur (S04-2-S) was measured turbidimetrically. Sodium (Na") and potassium (K+) content of water were determined by Flame photometer (Gallenkamp); magnesium (Mg2+) and calcium (Ca2+) content of water sample were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AA-6800, SHIMADZU). Two way analysis of variance were performed to evaluate variation of different physico-chemical parameters of water in freshwater wetlands. Duncan's Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was performed to identify significantly different pairs when null-hypothesis was rejected.

Achievement/Findings:

Water quality of any water body depends on the interactions of various physico-chemical factors, which in turn influence its biotic communities. Electric conductivity (EC), pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate-N, sulphur, phosphorus, cations i.e., Na", K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ of water did not vary significantly, but significant variation (at 5%) was observed in depth, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and ammonium-N content of water. Further investigation is needed for determining the content of iron, manganese, copper, zinc, nickel, cadmium and lead, etc. of water to assess their impacts on water quality. Their correlation with abundance, density and luxuriance of the existing. hydrophytic communities needs to be assessed for developing sustainable management strategy.
