The experiment was conducted at the research field of WRC (Wheat Research Centre), Nashipur, Dinajpur and RARS (Regional Agricultural Research Station), Jessore during the rabi season of 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 in collaboration with CEGIS (Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services). Six different watering options with three replications were considered. No irrigation treatment was set as a control. The highest yield 4.9 and 3.98 ton/ha were obtained by applying BARI (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute) recommended irrigation practice in Nashipur, Dinajpur with four irrigations of 286 mm and 273 mm water followed by 4.77 ton/ha and 3.90 ton/ha as per DRAS (Drought Assessment) model based on reported value with six irrigations applying 119 mm water and nine irrigations of 193.3 mm water in the year 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 respectively. The water productivity varied substantially among the watering options and showed a value of 1.71 kg/m3 and 1.46 kg/m3 for BARI recommended practice and 3.94 kg/m3 and 2.02 for DRAS model. In 2003-2004, the highest yield of 5.1 ton/ha was obtained from BARI recommended practice with four irrigations of 275 mm water followed by 4.65 ton/ha applying seven irrigations of 250 mm water as per DRAS model based on actual field data in Jessore. The water productivity was almost the same for both the treatments and it was 1.85 kg/m3. But in 2004-2005, the highest yield of 3.71 ton/ha was obtained by applying NIR as per DRAS model based on reported value with nine irrigations amounting of 240 mm water.

To compare the model predicted NIR with the BARl recommended water needs for wheat cultivation along with other treatments so that the field information could be generated from the investigation.

The experiment was conducted during the rabi seasons of 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. The Irrigation and Water Management group of BARl and CEGIS worked jointly to implement the experiment (validation of DRAS model for wheat) successfully, at WRC, Nashipur, Dinajpur, and RARS farm, Jessore, BARl. At Dinajpur site, the soil series of the field has been identified as Palashbari which has fallen under Agroecological region 1 (Old Himalayan Piedmont Plain). The texture of the subsoil is loam over and under lain by sandy loam. The field capacity and bulk density of the soil were 30% and 1.3 gm/cc, respectively. Jessore soil falls under Agroecological region 11 (High Ganges River Floodplain). The subsoil texture is silt loam overlain by silty clay loam. The field capacity and bulk density were 29% and 1.5 gm/cc, respectively. The plot size was 4mx5m arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. In both the sites, fertilizers were applied at recommended doses at the rate of 100, 35, 25 and 22 kg/ha of N, P, K and S, respectively. The seeds were sown on 21 November 2003 and 24 November 2004 at Dinajpur site and 01 December in both the years at Jessore site. The variety of wheat was shatabdi and the seed rate was 120 Kg/ha. The crops were harvested on 03 April 2004 and 27 March 2005 at Dinajpur and 30 March 2004 and 28 March 2005 at Jessore. Soil moisture status was monitored in every plot by gravimetric method before each irrigation. BARI recommended treatment plots were irrigated up to the field capacity of the soil and irrigation was applied at 20, 40, 60 and 80 days after sowing. The irrigation water was applied to bring the soil moisture at field capacity considering effective root zone depth. Soil moisture was determined before each irrigation by gravimetric method. The other treatments plots were irrigated according to the DRAS model recommendation. Measured water was applied to all treatments. At 20, 40 and 60 DAS (days after sowing), the rooting depths were considered as 30, 50 and 60 cm, respectively. Yield and yield contributing parameters viz. plant height, spike length, grains per spike, 1000 grain weight and grain yield were recorded.

From the two-years result, although, the application of irrigation water based on BARI recommended practice produced higher yield than that of the DRAS model but there is no significant difference. On the other hand, water productivity under the DRAS model almost 38% higher than that of the BARI practices which is very much important for the extension of wheat in drought prone areas in Bangladesh. The experiments need to be extended in other areas of Bangladesh for the beneficial use of DRAS model irrigation practice in farmer's leveL.
