Multivariate Analysis of Maize.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted with 27 maize genotypes at the experimental field of Genetics and Plant Breeding Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur to study their genetic diversity based on 12 quantitative characters during March 2006 to June 2006. Significant variations exist among the maize genotypes for all the characters under study as revealed by analysis of variance against each of the characters. Multivariate techniques were used to make cluster of 27 maize genotypes. The genotypes were fell into six clusters. Both principal component analysis and D² gave identical results in clustering of the genotypes. The Cluster II had the maximum number of genotypes (8) and cluster V and VI each had the minimum number (2) of genotypes. The highest intracluster distance (1.80*) was found in cluster II followed by cluster IV (1.3832*). The highest intercluster distance (18.44*) was noted between clusters V and VI and the lowest (3.455) between the cluster II and IV. The character, grains/ cob exerted maximum load (37.32%) to create genetic diversity. Besides, yield/plant and biomass/plant contributed remarkably towards divergence among the maize genotypes.

Objectives:

To study the estimate genetic worth and genetic diversity present in different genotypes of maize.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experiment field of Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University, Dinajpur during March to June 2006. Genetic divergence in existing genotypes was assessed by Mahalanobis’s D² statistics. Distance for a number of traits between populations was also measured by this analysis. The variation among the genotypes was tested by Wilk’s criteria ‘L’ followed by calculation of determinants of error and error + variety matrix using the following formula (Singh and Chaudhury, 1979).

Diversity pattern and other agronomic performance the genotypes, BD821 and BD822 from cluster V and the genotype BD816 and BD829 under cluster VI may be used for fruitful improvement of yield and yield contributing characters in maize.
