Screening for Cold Tolerance of Advance Rice Genotypes at Seedling Stage During Boro 2005-06.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out through Yoshidas’culture solution to find out the best advance breeding lines which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Among the tested rice genotypes a local variety Hbj.BIV attained significantly the highest (41.36 cm) shoot height than other tested rice genotypes. Seedling height varied from 15.24 to 25.52 cm among the advanced rice breeding materials. In the case of modern variety, the only cold tolerant variety BRRI dhan36 had the seedling height of 20.94 cm. Cumulative root length of rice genotypes were varied among rice genotypes and it ranged from 256.00 to 607.17 cm. Significantly the longest cumulative root length was obtained from Hbj.BIV (607.17 cm) than check and other tested rice genotypes. Some advanced lined produced better root length than BRRI dhan36. Some advance breeding lines (BR7226-12-4-1, BR7226-19-1-3, BR7230-7-2-3, BR7009-81-1-2-1, BR7009-81-1-3-2, BR7010-61-3-2-2, BR7012-82-1-3-1, BR7012-82-2-3-5, BR 7013-91-3-1-1, BR 7015-3-4-3-1, BR 7008-61-1-5, BR 7015-6-1-2, TOX3749-34-3-1, CAN8642, C5457-B-1, TOX3133-59-1-2-4 and SHWE WAR TUN) attained seedling strength more than check Hbj.BIV and BRRI dhan36.

Objectives:

To identify advance breeding materials which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds of 64 advance breeding lines along with 2 check varieties namely Hbj. BIV and BRRI dhan36 were sown on 05 January 2006 in netted bed attached with styro-foam sheet floating in a tray containing Yoshidas’culture solution. The pH level of culture solution were maintained at 5.0 throughout the experimental period. Each entry were sown in a line and 20 seedlings in each line were maintained. Seedlings were grown up to 30 days. On 05 February 2006, data on seedling height, cumulative root length and shoot dry weight were recorded. Seedling strength (mg/cm) was calculated using the following formulae:

Strength (mg/cm) = Shoot wt (mg)/ shoot height (cm)

The scoring system for leaf color, plant height and seedling strength are as follows:

>30 = 1

25-30 = 3

20-25 = 5

15-20 = 7

<15 = 9

>300 cm = 1

225-300 = 3

150-225 = 5

75-150 = 7

<75 = 9

Seedling strength (mg/cm)

>4.0 = 1

3.5-4.0 = 3

3.0-3.5 = 5

2.5-3.0 = 7

<2.5 = 9
