Observational Trial for Cold Tolerance (ot) During Boro 2005-06

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During winter season cold injury of irrigated Boro rice is a common problem for many areas in Bangladesh. We do not have cold tolerant variety both at seedling and reproductive stages till today. This study was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Gazipur and other 2 regional stations Rajshahi and Rangpur to select genotypes with cold tolerance, desirable agronomic characteristics and earliness compared to standard varieties. Four genotypes, namely YUNLEN 7, YUNLEN 9, SANGJU ll and 83036-TR654-9-1 performed well irrespective of locations by considering percent stablishment, plant height, panicle emergence, panicle length (inside, outside & total), last internode length, flag leaf sheath length, degeneration of rachis branches and phenotypic acceptability. Out of 40 varieties/lines, 6 genotypes (HEX12, HUALIENYU202, YUNLEN 7, YUNLEN 9, SANJU11, YR6488-ACP36) performed better than checks at Gazipur, 5 genotypes (YUNLEN 7, YUNLEN 9, SANJU 11, YR6488-ACP36 and 83036-TR654-9-1) at Rangpur and 6 genotypes (IR68333-R-R-B-22, YUNLEN 7, YUNLEN 9, SANJU11, YR6488-ACP36 and 83036-TR654-9-1) at Rajshahi.

Objectives:

To select genotypes with cold tolerance, desirable agronomic characteristics and earliness compared to standard varieties.

Methodology:

Forty genotypes including two check varieties BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 were tested in this trial. Seedlings were transplanted using single seedling per hill with a spacing of 25 x 15 cm. The unit plot size was 5.4m x 2 rows. Fertilizers were applied @ 100, 20, 40, 11 and 3 kg N, P, K, S, Zn ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate. The whole amounts of P, K, Zn and S were applied as basal at the time of final land preparation. The nitrogen applied as top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 date after transplanting (DAT). Weeds were controlled by hand weeding at 20, 30 and 45 DAT. Irrigation and insecticide were applied as and when necessary. The trial was conducted in three locations at BRRI Farm, Gazipur, BRRI regional station, Rajshahi & Rangpur. Data on establishment rate (%), plant height, panicle emergence, panicle length (inside, outside & total), last internode length, flag leaf, sheath length, degeneration of rachis branches and phenotypic acceptability were recorded.

Four genotypes, namely YUNLEN 7, YUNLEN 9, SANGJU ll and 83036-TR654-9-1 were selected as cold tolerant genotypes and could be used in cold tolerant variety development program.
