Cold Tolerance of Long, Medium and Short Duration Rice Varieties at Reproductive Phase.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Gazipur to identify the factors related to cold tolerance of rice at reproductive phase. In most of the varieties panicle initiation started in the last week of January and ended in the last week of February, and 50% flowering was completed between the last week of February and end of the 3^rd week of March. During this period the weekly average minimum temperature was 15.3⁰C ranging from 11.4⁰C to 19.3⁰C. Therefore, the crop grown at Gazipur was exposed to severe cold temperature at reproductive phase. This result indicated that seeding must be done in the middle of October which might be the best seeding time to study the cold tolerance of rice at the reproductive stage. The grain yield, yield components and sterility varied significantly among varieties. All the rice varieties except BRRI dhan29 produced higher grain yields in 2^nd planting date than other dates due to higher panicles per unit area and filled grains/ panicles. Among the three planting date the lowest yield was recorded in 1^st date. BRRI dhan29 produced higher grain yields in 3^rd planting date. Percent sterility of grain was higher in 1^st planting date than other date.

Objectives:

To identify the factors related to cold tolerance at reproductive phase.

Methodology:

Seven rice varieties such as BR1, BR2, BR14, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36 and HbjBIV were used. Sprouted seeds of the varieties were sown in the puddle seedbed on 15th October, 15th November and 15th December, 2003. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted using 2-3 seedlings per hill spaced with 20 cm x 15 cm. Experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Fertilizers were applied @ 100, 20, 40, 11 and 3 kg NPKSZn ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate. The whole amounts of P, K, Zn and S were applied as basal at the time of final land preparation. Urea was top-dressed in three equal splits. Weeding, irrigation and insecticide were applied as and when necessary. The grain yield, yield components and different plant characters were measured.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the varieties BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 performed better in terms of higher grain yields. Panicle emergence (%) as affected by low temperature at the reproductive phase was positively associated with the last internode length (LIL) which is reconfirmation of last year findings. This LIL can be used in cold tolerance screening program. October 15, seeding would be the best seeding time to study the cold tolerance of rice at the reproductive stage.
