Cold Tolerance of Rice at Reproductive Phase.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Gazipur to identify the factors associated with cold tolerance of rice at reproductive phase. Panicle emergence, productive tillers, panicle length, flag leaf sheath length, last internode length and days to flower of rice plants varied substantially among varieties. In fact, panicle emergence (%) varied from 71.1 to 99.8% and productive tillers (%) varied from 41.2 to 75.6% among the varieties. Similarly, panicle length varied from 16.4 cm in BR15 to 23.2 cm in BR9 and flag leaf sheath length varied from 18.3 to 26.4 cm. Similar pattern was observed in last internode length where it varied from 14.4 to 28.1 cm. Days to flower varied from 137 days in BR1 to 169 days in BR7 among the varieties. The panicle emergence (%) was positively but significantly associated with last internode length (cm) (r= 0.76**) and flag leaf sheath length (r= 0.48*). On the other hand, panicle emergence (%) and days to flower showed polynomial relationship (r= 0.66**). Whereas, last internode length (cm) and flag leaf sheath length (cm) showed strong positive relationship (r= 0.85**). These results indicated that last internode length was a desirable parameter for higher panicle emergence at low temperature attributing to cold tolerance at the reproductive phase of rice.

Objectives:

To identify the factors related to cold tolerance at reproductive phase.

Methodology:

Twenty two BRRI developed rice varieties such as BR1, BR2, BR3, BR6, BR7, BR8, BR9, BR12, BR14, BR15, BR16, BR17, BR18, BR19, BR24, BR26, BRRI dhan27, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan35, BRRI dhan36 and Hbj.BIV were used. Sprouted seeds of the varieties were sown in the puddle seedbed on 14th October, 2000. Experiment was laid out in RCB design with 3 replications. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted at both the locations using 2-3 seedlings per hill with 20 cm line to line and 15 cm plant to plant spacing. Fertilizers 100-20-40-10-3 kg N, P, K, S and Zn ha^-1 in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied during final land preparation except nitrogen. The nitrogen was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 30 and 45 date after transplanting (DAT). Weeds were controlled by hand weeding at 15, 35 and 45 DAT. Irrigation and insecticide were applied as and when necessary. Data on productive tillers, panicle emergence, panicle length, flag leaf sheath length, last internode length, days to flower, grain yield and yield components were measured.

Panicle emergence (%) as affected by low temperature at the reproductive phase was positively associated with the last internode length which can be used in cold tolerance screening program.
