Genetic Diversity in Some Maintainer Lines of Hybrid Rice (oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetically diverged 45 maintainer lines of rice hybrids were collected through IRHON (International Rice Hybrids Observation Nursery) program from Philippines (IRRI), China, Indonesia and India of which nine maintainers from BRRI (Bangladesh). Genetic divergence was estimated at BRRI, Gazipur during 2007-08 using Mahalanobis’s statistic (D²) and principle component analysis. Cluster analysis revealed 45 maintainers were constellated into five clusters. The lines chosen from the same ecogeographic region were found scattered in different clusters which indicated that genetic diversity and geographic distribution were not necessarily related. The inter-cluster distances were higher than the intra-cluster distance reflecting wider genetic diversity among the genotypes of different groups. The highest inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster I and III followed by I and IV where the highest intra-cluster distance was found in the cluster III indicated that the highly divergent types existed in these clusters. Number of effective/m² was found to be the maximum contributors towards the total divergence. The genetically diverged lines viz. IR62829B, PMS8B, V20B, IR78355B, IR78361B, IR79128B and BRRI 8B with the highest mean value for the characters: grain yield, number of effective tiller/m², plant height, days to maturity, number of spikelet/panicle, spikelet fertility, panicle length, panicle weight and 1000-grain weight were selected and might be used as parents in crossing programme for getting wide genetic base maintainer to develop promising CMS line(s).

Objectives:

The present study was, therefore, undertaken to estimate the genetic divergence of 45 maintainer lines of hybrid rice and also to identify diverged genotypes, which could be used as parents in developing promising CMS line(s) by improvement of its cognate maintainer line for heterotic rice hybrids.

Methodology:

A total of 45 maintainer of rice hybrids were included in the study which consisting 28 lines from IRRI, Philippines, nine from BRRI, Bangladesh; six were from china; one from India and one from Indonesia. All the genotypes were grown at BRRI, Gazipur in Boro (irrigated) season during November, 2007 to May, 2008. Thirty-days old seedlings of each entry were transplanted in 3m² plots in RCB design with three replications using one seedling per hill with a spacing of 20 x 20 cm. Cultural practices were followed to raise the crop as per recommendation for irrigated rice. Observations from five randomly selected plants were recorded for plant height (cm), days to maturity, effective tiller/m², number of spikelet/panicle, flag leaf length(cm), panicle length (cm), spikelet fertility (%), panicle weight(g), 1000-grain weight(g) and grain yield (t/ha) were recorded from individual plots. Means of these characters over the replications were used. Data were subjected to both univariate and multivariate analysis. Multivariate analysis viz. Principal component analysis (PCA), Principal co-ordinate analysis (PCO), Cluster analysis (CLU) and Canonical vector analysis (CVA) were done by using a computer software GENSTAT 5.13 program of IBM computer. Genetic divergence was studied following Mahalanobis’s (1936) generalized distance (D²) extended by Rao (1952). Canonical variate analysis was followed for determining the group constellation and principle component analysis (Rao, 1964) was carried out for graphical representation of the genotypes.

Achievement/Findings:

The multivariate analysis IR62829B, PMS8B, V20B, IR78355B, IR78361B, IR79128B and BRRI 8B were selected due to their greater divergence for the mentioned characters that would offer a good scope to develop elite CMS line(s) by improvement of maintainer for the exploitation of better heterosis in hybrid rice.
