Influence of Planting Time on the Productivity of the Traditional Aromatic Rice in the Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Farm, Gazipur in the Aman season to find out the optimum planting time and selection of traditional aromatic rice varieties. Thirty-day-old seedlings of Kalijira, Kataribhog, Chinigura and Badshabhog were transplanted from 22 July to 7 October at 15 days Interval in 1999 and 2000. Rice planted from 22 August 10 7 September gave more number of panicles and grains panicle^-1 resulted in higher grain yield. Compared to 22 August (Julian date 233) planting, grain yield decreased by 22, 13, 8, 30 and 66 percent, respectively, when planted on 22 July (Julian dare 203), 7 August (Julian date 218), 7 September (Julian date 248). 22 September (Julian date 263) and 7 October (Julian date 278). Chinigura and Kalijira gave higher grain yield which was statistically similar with Kataribhog. Higher number of panicles and low spikelet sterility of Chinigura and Kalijira and heavier individual grain weight of Kataribhog resulted in higher grain yield. While, the low grain yield was observed in Badshibhog irrespective of planting date. Chinigura matured earlier than the rest of the varieties. Chinigura and Kalijira could be transplanted from 22 August to 7 September for higher productivity In Aman season.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable varieties and time of planting for traditional scented rice in Aman season to increase the productivity.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Farm, Gazipur with five times of planting and four traditional scented photoperiod- sensitive rice varieties. The varieties were Kalijira, Chinigura, Kataribhog and Badshabhog, and transplanting times were 22 July, 7 August, 22 August, 7 September and 22 September and 7 October both in 1999 and 2000. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design, placing planting time in the main plot and variety in the sub plot with three replications. Thirty-day-old seedlings were transplanted at 20' 15 cm spacing with 2-3 seedling hill^-1. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 60-17-40- 10-4 kg N, P, K, S and Zn ha^-1, respectively, during final land preparation except nitrogen. Nitrogen was top-dressed in three equal splits at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 30 DAT and at 5 days before panicle initiation. The crop field was kept weed free by 2 hands weeding at 15 and 30 DAT. Plant height, tiller number and dry matter were measured at different growth stages. Five destructive sample hills were collected from each plot out side the harvested area for measuring plant height and counting tiller number. The same sample was used for the dry matter determination (drying in oven at 40 °C for 72 hours). For grain yield five square meter from the centre of the plot was harvested. The grain yield was adjusted to 14 % moisture content and expressed in ton ha^-1. The straw was dried in the sun until gaining constant weight.

Optimum date of transplanting was determined from the equation. Y = a + bP + cp²by taking dY/dP = 0. Where, Y is rice yield (kg ha^-1), P is planting date, a is intercept (estimated yield) initial planting date, b and c arc coefficients, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The traditional aromatic rice might be planted in optimum time on 22 August -7 September to obtain higher grain yield. The yield potentiality of Chinigura is higher followed by Kalijira, Kataribhog and Badshabhog.
