Natural Regeneration of Mangroves in the Coastal Areas of Bangladesh with Particular Reference to Noakhali

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies in the mangrove plantations and adjacent areas revealed little chance for the natural development of a second rotation crop in the existing plantations. In some islands of Noakhali Coastal Afforestation Division, gewa (Excoecaria agallocha) showed promising performance towards development of a second rotation crop. Of the available saplings and poles, E. agallocha alone constituted 35 and 70 percent respectively. Studies on the scope of natural regeneration of this species for sustainable development of mangrove plantations may be undertaken.

Objectives:

To assess the natural regeneration status of groves in the coastal areas.

Methodology:

Observations were made all along the coastal different occasions and finally the survey out in twelve small islands, locally chars of Noakhali Coastal Afforestation Division in 1994. These chars are inundated in monsoon during high tides and cover an area of about 15000 ha. However, chars are only inundated during the spring tides dry season. Additionally, survey was also conducted in two newly emerged, unplanted and barren chars. Average annual rainfall of the area was 3138 mm. Depending on the salinity varied considerably. Maximum and minimum salinity of water was recorded to be 20ppt and 3ppt respectively. The climate was humid. Maximum and minimum were 31? and 20? respectively. Soil was silty-day-loam and the soil reaction was aslightly alkaline. Transect method was followed for the purpose of sampling. The width of the transect was 2 meters and the length 180 meters, taken perpendicularly the water channel. Depending on the size of chars and heterogenity, the number of the transects varied from two to three. To have an overall representation, sampling was undertaken in various age groups and density classes of plantations, and in all, 34 transects were laid out randomly over 12 chars. This was found to be adequate when tested. Number of available naturally occurring seedlings, saplings, poles and planted trees of different species in the sampled areas was recorded. The data were subsequently analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques.

Achievement/Findings:

There is a little scope for the development of mangrove forests or second rotation crop in the existing plantations by means of natural regeneration. There is no alternative to the present practice of artificial regeneration for raising mangrove plantations in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Gewa (Excoecaria agallocha) on some chars of Noakhali Coastal Afforestation Division appeared promising for the sustainable development of forest through natural regeneration.
