An experiment was conducted in the field of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur during winter season of 2005 - 06 to study the effects of applied phosphorus fertilizer doses on the nodulation and yield in chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). Three chickpea varieties BU Chola-1, BARI Chola-6 and BARI Chola-7 and five fertilizer doses, 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg P2O5 ha-1 were used. The nodulation, growth and yield varied significantly due to the variation in the phosphorus levels. Irrespective of varieties, crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), total dry matter accumulation, the nodulation, yield and harvest index increased with the increasing rate of applied phosphorus up to 60 kg P2O5 ha-1 and then decreased with further increase of phosphorus fertilizer dose. Nodule dry weight plant-1 and the seed yield was correlated positively. But this correlation was statistically insignificant.

1. To study the effects of different levels of phosphorus fertilizer on the growth, nodulation and yield of three chickpea varieties.

The soil of the experiment plot was silty clay loam and located at the center of the Madhupur Tract, Agro Ecological Zone (AEZ) number-28. Treatments comprised of the five phosphorus doses P0=0 kg P2O5 ha-1, P30=30 kg P2O5 ha-1, P60=60 kg P2O5 ha-1, P90=90 kg P2O5 ha-1 and P120=120kg P2O5 ha-1 and three chickpea varieties BU Chola–1, BARI Chola–6 and BARI Chola–7. The experiment was laied out in factorial randomoized block design (RCBD). There were fifteen treatment combinations with three replications. At the time of final land preparation urea 45 kg ha-1, MOP- 35 kg ha-1, boron - 5 kg ha-1 was applied as basal fertilizer. Five doses of triple super phosphate (TSP) were applied as treatments. The area of the individual plot was 20 m2 (5mx4m). A distance of 1.5 meter between the plot and 2 meter between the blocks were maintained. Row to row distance was 40 cm and plant to plant10cm. At the flowering stage sample plants were collected from 0.5 meters linearly for the collection of nodule. The roots of the collected samples were washed carefully and all the nodules were separated manually and oven dried at 700 C for 72 hours to record the dry weight of the nodules. The yield attributes were calculated from the sampled 10 plants. At the maturity 10m2 area was demarcated and the plants were harvested to record the yield. From the each plot 1000 seeds were collected and dried and weighed at 12% moisture level. Finally harvest index was calculated. Data were analyzed with the help of MSTAT-C program and mean differences among the treatments were adjusted by using the Least Significance Test (LSD) at 5% level of significance.
