Selection of Plantation Tree Species for Degraded Sal Forest Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An elimination trial of five fast and five slow growing tree species was intitiated in July, 1988 at Madhupur in the district of Tangail. Survival percentage, height and diameter increment of the survived trees were recorded periodically for five and half years. Among the fast growing species, Acacia mangium, A. auriculiformis and Eucalyptus camaldulensis and among the slow growing species, Xylia kerrii showed promising performance in respect of both height and diameter growth.

Objectives:

To find out suitable species for degraded sal forests, an elimination trial of five fast and five slow growing species.

Methodology:

The trial was established at Charaljani Silvicultural Research Station, Madhupur, Tangail. The trial site lies between 24° to 24°15', North latitude and between 90° to 91° East longitude. The soil is clayey-loam with pH range of 5.5 to 6.0. Organic matter content of the forest soil reaches <2.5% within 15 cm depth. The drainage systems are generally good on convex land but imperfect on concave land. The climate of the site is moist, warm and equitable almost all the year round. The mean annual rainfall averages 2253 mm for a maximum period of rainfall from April to October. The mean annual temperature is around 25.3°C with a mean maximum of 30.1°C and minimum 20.5°C. The minimum relative humidity is 72% to a maxi- mum of 92%. Fast growing species planted in this trial were Acacia auriculiformis, A. mngium, Albizia procera, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Prosopis juliflora, and slow growing species were Artocarpus. chaplasha, Chukrasia tabularis, Dipterocarpus turbinatus, Xylia kerrii and Syzygiumgrande. of all species were obtained from the Orchard Division of Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI), Chittagong. Seedlings raised in the nursery of Charaljani Silvicultural Research Station following standard nursery procedures size filled with a mixture of forest top soil decomposed cowdung in a proportion of 3:1. When the seedlings had attained planting they were planted in the field in late July 1988 in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Five replications with 36 seedlings per plot were planted at a spacing of 1.5m×1.5m. All plants in the received the homogenous weeding and cleaning operations. Survival and height of all the 36 in the plot were measured annually and diameter at breast height (dbh) since the plantation attained three years. Final observations were at the age of 5.5 years and the growth data analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

Survival percentages of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and Acacia auriculiformis were significantly higher than other species. Among the fast growing species, Acacia mangium, A. auriculiformis and Eucalyptus camaldulensis and among the slow growing species, Xylia kerrii showed promising performance in respect of both height and diameter growth.
