Screening of Rice Genotypes for Flash Flood Submergence Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Physiology Division in Bangladesh Rice Research Institute to evaluation of genotypes for tolerant to complete flash flood submergence condition. A total of 37 genotypes and 2 checks namely BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52 were tested in this experiment. Fourteen days old seedling was in the Plant Physiology submergence tank. The spacing was 20 cm X 20 cm and 3 rows were maintained for each genotype. At 14 days after transplanting, the crop was allowed to complete submergence maintaining 75 cm water depth for 14 days. During submergence period, the water of the tank was made turbid twice daily and the light intensity in upper level (normal), mid-level (30 cm below the water surface) and lower level (75 cm below the water surface) of the tank water were measured through light meter (LI-250). The water pH and temperature were also measured and recorded. At 14 days after submergence, the water drained out from the submergence tank. The survival data was taken at 5 days after de-submergence. Survival scoring was done by SES. Recovery status was also evaluated 30 days of de-submergence. Tolerant check BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52 survived successfully, survivability was 72% - 83%. Among the tested genotypes, only one genotypes namely IR09F202 was identified as tolerant to 14 days of complete submergence having survivability 61% and good recovery. From the results one genotype should be considered for further investigation.
