Hybrid rice material development program is one of the core programs of hybrid rice.  To generate parental lines (A, B and R lines) from local exotic sources is the main function of this program. Adaptability of locally developed parental lines is more suitable for environmental fluctuation. So, this program is very essential and vital for hybrid rice breeding.

  1.  Developing CMS lines from the adaptable varieties/lines suitable for Bangladesh,
  2. Maintenance & evaluation of exotic/locally developed CMS lines,
  3. Selection of heterotic rice hybrids & usable parental materials.

Material development program consist of the following experiments- a) Source Nursery b) Test cross Nursery c) Back cross Nursery d) CMS maintenance and evaluation Nursery. Each of the individual experiments has different methodology. Source nursery comprises of collected locally and exotic advance lines, available best CMS lines for that season and available restorer lines. Crossing is made between CMS with advance lines that is evaluated in Test cross nursery for maintainer and restorer search and CMS with restorer line crosses is evaluated as experimental hybrids. So, generating parental materials is the main object of material development part
