Back Cross Nursery During T Aman Season of 2010

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Conversion of suspected CMS lines into new CMS lines is done in back cross nursery. New CMS lines are developed in this nursery in the back ground of elite maintainer lines. Up to BC₆ generations conversion are made if the suspected CMS line expressed complete sterility as well as possess good agronomic features. It is then shifted to CMS maintenance and evaluation nursery as new CMS lines.Thirteen (13) BC₆ generations were designated as new CMS lines and included into CMS maintenance & evaluation nursery. Thirty six (36) BC₄_,eight (8) BC₃_, five (5) BC₂ and fourteen (14) BC₁ generations were stable for pollen sterility and advanced for next generation. Only completely sterile entries were selected for generation advancement

Objectives:

Developing CMS lines from identified maintainer by back crossing.

Methodology:

Materials: 15 BC₆, 39 BC₄, 11 BC₃, 6 BC₂ and 15 BC₁ generations. Successive back cross progenies ranging from BC₁-BC₆ were grown along with their corresponding suspected maintainer lines. Pollen fertility of each of the plant in a line was evaluated. Completely sterile plants were immediately crossed with its corresponding male parents and the BC-generation was advanced. Adequate soil fertility was ensured by applying additional quantities of Urea- TSP-MP- Gypsum- ZnSO₄@ 150:100:70:60:10 kg/ha, respectively. Total TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnSO₄were applied in final land preparation. Total Urea was applied in four installments, 1/4 ^th at final land preparation, 1/4^th at 15-20 days after transplanting (DAT), 1/4^that 35-40 DAT and the rest before panicle initiation. Irrigation and weed management was done when necessary
