Effect of Seasonal Water Flow on Some Aspects of Fish Population Dynamics in the Padma River

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of monthly water flow (2006 and 2007) on some fish population parameters of Padma river at three upazillas in Rajshahi district from January 2007 to December 2007. The highest and the lowest average monthly water flow were 36745.38 cusec in September and 835.51 cusec in April, respectively in 2006. In 2007, the highest and the lowest average monthly water flow were 44376.81 cusec in September and 1225.34 cusec in February, respectively. In 2007 the highest and lowest average total catch were 68.1 kg day^-1 in November and 22.2 kg day^-1 in June, respectively. The relationship between total catch (2007) and seasonal water flow (2006 and 2007) was found significant. In 2007, the highest and lowest average value of CPUE of gill net (fash jal) were 37 kg unit^-1 day^-1 in November and February, and 7 kg unit^-1 day^-1 in June. The relationship between CPUE (2007) and seasonal water flows (2006 and 2007) was found significant. The fishing effort was reached to its highest and lowest average value 85 gears day^-1 in November and 38 gears day^-1 in June, respectively in 2007. The relationship between fishing effort and seasonal water flow was found significant.

Objectives:

1. To identify the effect of seasonal water flow on some fish population parameters in the river Padma.

Methodology:

Selection of the study area - Three upazilla Paba, Charghat and Bagha of Rajshahi district are situated beside the main stream of the Padma river. Three fishing stations, one from each upazilla were selected for sampling. All fishing activity of these three stations is regularly monitored by the upazilla fisheries office. All registered fishermen are bound to sell their catch to these three stations. The total area of the river covered by these three upazilla is about 7410 acres. Sampling schedule - A major goal of the research was to assess the impacts of seasonal water flow on total catch, catch per unit effort, fishing effort, species composition and gear types; every seasonal sampling is important equally. Sampling was done in all the months of the year. Data collection - There are different executive bodies at fishing stations, a president, a manager, a cashier etc. The manager always collects the data of total catch and sell and note it down. At the end of every month they are bound to give the data of that month to the upazilla fisheries office. The data of total catch and species composition were collected from the managers of the three stations. Seasonal water flow - From the beginning of the water sharing treaty, Hydrology Department of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Bangladesh monitored the water flow of Padma River at different points. Hardinge Bridge is one of the main points where they usually conduct their monitoring. The data of seasonal water flow of 2006 and 2007 at Hardinge Bridge point were collected from the Hydrology Department of BWDB. During data collection, the data of the month of November 2007 was not available. BWDB records the data three to four times in a month. Total catch - In every month the data of ten days catch (in kg) were collected from every sampling point. Gear types or the species composition were not accounted to collect this data. At the data of total catch (from 6am to 6 am) were collected every in the morning (8 am). The average of ten days data was used to assess the variation of monthly total catch. Finally an analyses was performed between the total catch and seasonal water flow to assess the dependency of total catch on the seasonal water flow whether the total catch changes with the seasonal water flow or not. Catch per unit effort (CPUE) - The catch per unit effort (CPUE) was collected as the total catch per gear per day (6am to 6 am). To assess the catch per unit effort (CPUE) of fishing gear, the seine net was selected because it is a common gear in every season. All types of small and medium sized fishes are caught by this gear. The CPUE data were collected from the same selected fishermen every day. The same fishermen were using the same gear at the same type of fishing ground. So, the fishing efficiency remained constant. Ten days data were used at first to assess the potentiality of their catch monthly. Then an analysis was done between the CPUE and the seasonal water flow to check the dependency of CPUE on the seasonal water flow. Fishing effort - Fishing effort was assessed as the numbers of gear present in a single day (6 am to 6 am) at 2 km area from the both side of the point of Charghat fishing station. The data was recorded daily. Total catch, catch composition, fisherman number did not affect the effort data. At first an assessment of monthly variation in the number of gears or fishing effort was done. Secondly a relationship was assessed between the data of fishing effort and seasonal water flow.
