Nitrogen Fertilizer After Green Manuring on the Yield of T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali during the period from June to December, 2014 to study the effect of nitrogen fertilizer after green manuring on yield and yield components and to find the optimum dose of urea for yield maximization of BR23 and BRRI dhan40. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) was grown in the experimental field and incorporated into the soil when the dhaincha plant attained maximum amount of biomass (about 50 days after sowing). Five doses of nitrogen were T₀ (Control), T₁ (20 Kg N/ha), T₂ (40 Kg N/ha), T₃ (60 Kg N/ha) and T₄ (80 Kg N/ha). Besides N, experimental plot was fertilized with 60 Kg ha^-1 P₂O₅ and 40 Kg ha^-1 K₂O through TSP and MoP respectively to support the normal growth of plant. The variety BR23 showed the highest grain yield of 4.55 t/ha and the lowest of 4.10 t/ha was recorded in BRRI dhan40. Application of 60 kg N/ha resulted with the highest grain yield of 5.98 t/ha and the lowest of 2.94 t/ha was found in control plot. However, the highest grain yield of 6.15 t/ha was recorded in BR23 with T₃ (60 kg N/ha) and the lowest of 2.87 t/ha in BRRI dhan40 with control condition. The result demonstrated that after green manuring 60 kg N/ha was the best treatment for both BR23 and BRRI dhan40 which reduces the cost of production. Further investigation is necessary to make conclusive remarks. The findings of the study suggest that use of green manure and fertilizer is important for sustainable production of rice.

Objectives:

To the optimum dose of urea for yield maximization of BR23 and BRRI dhan40 after green manuring.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in T. aman season from June to December in 2014 at the Agronomy field laboratory of Patuakhali Science and Technology University, Dumki, Patuakhali. The experimental area belongs to the non-calcareous clay soil under Agroecological Zone of the Ganges Tidal Floodplain (AEZ-13). The region covers several river borne sediments of silt. The experimental field was medium high land with poor drained condition. The land was clay loam in texture having a soil pH value of 6.0, moderate in organic matter content. BR23 and BRRI dhan40 were used in this experiment. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 2m. Seeds were collected from Regional Research Station of BRRI, Sagardi, Barisal. Healthy seeds were selected by specific gravity method. The selected seeds were soaked in water for 24 hours and then they kept in gunny bags for sprouting. The seeds started sprouting after 48 hours and were suitable for sowing in nursery after 72 hours. Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) was grown in the experimental field and incorporated into the soil when the dhaincha plant attained maximum amount of biomass (about 50 days after sowing). Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted with the spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. Three seedlings hill^-1 were transplanted in the main field. Five doses of nitrogen were T₀ (Control), T₁ (20 Kg N/ha), T₂ (40 Kg N/ha), T₃ (60 Kg N/ha) and T₄(80 Kg N/ha). Besides N, experimental plot was fertilized with 60 Kg ha^-1 P₂O₅ and 40 Kg ha^-1 K₂O through TSP and MoP respectively to support the normal growth of plant. Full doses of TSP, MoP and 1/3^rd of urea were applied as basal. Remaining urea was top dressed in two equal split at 20 and 40 days after transplanting. To ensure and maintain the normal growth and development of the crop intercultural operations viz. weeding, plant protection measures, urea top dressing and bund repairing were done at proper time.

Achievement/Findings:

The result demonstrated that after green manuring 60 kg N/ha was the best treatment for both BR23 and BRRI dhan40 which reduces the cost of production. Further investigation is necessary to make conclusive remarks. The findings of the study suggest that use of green manure and fertilizer is important for sustainable production of rice.
