An experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute farm, Gazipur during wet seasons (June-November) in 2002 and 2003 to evaluate effects of bed width, plant row number per bed and plant-to-plant distance on the agroeconomic productivity of transplant Aman rice under bed planting in Rice-Wheat cropping system. Transplanting on 70, 80 and 90 cm width bed with two and three plant rows per bed along with flat (conventional) and 10, 15 and 20 cm plant-to-plant distances were tested. Bed planting with 70 cm bed width of increased grain yield to 17%, over conventional method. It increased the grains panicle-1 of rice. The cost of cultivation in bed planting (Tk 13.645- 15.716 ha-1) was much lower than conventional method (Tk 19,765 ha-1) whereas gross return, gross margin and benefit-cost ratio in 70 cm beds (Tk 41.960-44.900 ha-1, Tk 26.310-30.450 ha-1 and 2.68-3.11, respectively) were higher than conventional method (Tk 38.700-38.800 ha-1. Tk I8.930- 19.030 ha-1 and 1.96. respectively). Thus bed planting appeared to be promising for both yield advantage and cost-effectiveness.

To determine the effects of bed width, plant row number per bed and plant-to-plant distance on the agroeconomic productivity of transplant Aman rice under bed planting in Rice-Wheat cropping system.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during wet season (June-November) of 2002 and 2003. Soil of the experimental plot was clay loam with soil pH 6.78. Raised beds of 70, 80 and 90 cm width  with two and three plant rows per bed along with flat (conventional) planting and 10, 15, 20 cm plant-to-plant distances were tested. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 16 m2. BRII and BRRI dhan31 were used in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Raised beds and furrows were made manually for wheat crop by spade following the conventional land preparation in the previous season. The heights of beds were 15 cm. After harvesting of wheat, these beds were used for growing Aman rice. Glycel (41 % Glyphosate) @ 3.7 L ha-1 was applied 15 days before transplanting for killing weeds. Transplanting of rice on bed was done in zero tillage condition. The conventional tillage plots were prepared by puddling. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn were applied @ 100,20, 35, 10 and 4 kg ha-1, respectively. The whole of P, K. S and Zn were applied at final land preparation in the conventional treatment and in bed planting treatments, these basal doses were applied on the top of the beds before transplanting. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 15.30 and 50 days alter transplanting. Twenty-nine- and 27-day-old seedlings of rice were transplanted on 15 and 20 July in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Two to three seedlings hill-1 were used. Irrigation was applied one day before transplanting between the furrows of bed to make the soil soft. For conventional method planting spacing was 20 cm x 20 cm. Other recommended crop management practices were followed. Rice was harvested when matured on the first and the second weeks of November in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Data on grain yield and yield components were collected at maturity. Cost of land preparation, bed preparation, labour, inputs and irrigation and price of the products and byproducts were recorded.

It may be concluded that rice could be transplanted on raised bed and agro-economic productivity increased by bed planting with 70 cm width of beds over conventional method in rice-wheat cropping system.
