Neutral Sulfite Anthraquinone Pulping of Bagasse

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Application of the neutral sulfite (NS) anthraquinone (AQ) pulping of bagasse has been investigated in the laboratory scale. Normal NS and soda pulping have also been conducted for comparison. NS-AQ pulping was found to give increased unbleached pulp yield by 7.9% of the bagasse weight compared with soda pulping. The bleached pulp yield gain was 7%. Use of 0.1% anthraquinone was sufficient to give the beneficial effect. NS-AQ pulp was superior in strength compared with NS and soda pulps from bagasse.

Objectives:

To find out the suitability of bagasse in Neutral Sulphite-Anthraquinone (NS-AQ) process

Methodology:

Raw material

Freshly crushed bagasse was received from the North Bengal Paper Mills. It was processed in a hydropulper for 2 min for depithing. The material yield on depithing was about 77%. The depithed bagasse was then air-dried. Its dry matter content was 79%.

Pulping

Pulping experiments were carried out with 225 g of bagasse (oven dry basis) in 2 L stainless steel bombs with 6 bombs at a time. Analytical grades of AQ, Na₂SO₃, Na₂CO₃and technical grade of NaOH were used. The following cooking parameters were kept constant;

Liquor to bagasse ratio, 5:1
Alkali ratio (for NS), 0.65-0.95 for its optimization experiments and 0.83 for others.
Rise of temperature from room temperature to 80°C by 30 min and from 80°C to 165°C by 60 min.
Cooking at maximum temperature, 165°C, during 60 min.

The different points of delignification were achieved by varying the total alkali. The amount of AQ used in NS cooks was 0.1% and 0.2% calculated on oven-dry bagasse. The bombs were cooled after cooking. The cooked material was washed in running water overnight and disintegrated. Hard cooked stock was defiberised in a Sprout Waldron Laboratory refiner with a 0.25 mm plate clearance. Screening was done in a flat vibratory screen with 0.38 mm slots.

Bleaching

The bleachability of NS, NS-AQ and soda pulps from bagasse with a kappa number of about 20 was studied using a CEH bleaching sequence. Active chlorine applied to the chlorination stage was obtained by multiplying the kappa number by 0.22. This corresponds to 75% of the total chlorine demand in the bleaching process.

Analyses

The following properties were determined: yield, kappa number, Elrepho brightness, pH of the waste liquor. The pulps were beaten in a PFI mill with 20 g of pulp instead 30 g. The paper making properties were evaluated using SCAN standard methods

Achievement/Findings:

Full chemical pulp can be made from bagasse by NS-AQ process.
The alkali ratio is an important variable in NS and NS-AQ pulping. The optimum alkali ratio lies between 0.80 and 0.85.
Use of 0.1% AQ in NS pulping is sufficient for delignification and yield protection. The unbleached yield increased by 7.9% (on the bagasse weight) in NS-AQ pulping compared with the soda counterpart.
Bleaching response of NS and NS-AQ bagasse pulps was good.
NS-AQ pulping produced the strongest unbleached pulp. On bleaching, the strength properties improved further. Based on these findings it can also be concluded that there is a good prospect for NS-AQ pulping of bagasse. Thus, bagasse can serve as a viable alternative cellulosic raw material in the proposed jute based pulp mill in Bangladesh.
