Marketing Pattern of Some Multipurpose Tree Species Production in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the marketing system of some Multipurpose Tree Species (MPTS) products in four districts of Bangladesh. Data were collected by stratifying the growers according to the land holding category and interviewing eight growers in each category. Marketing of MPTS products was found everywhere in all five categories-the landless, marginal, small, medium and large, but the magnitude of marketable products varied among the sites and farm categories. The growers belonging to landless and large farm categories ranked top in selling their products. Involvement of the intermediaries was found least in lower farm categories. Retail price turns 117 percent higher than the farmers' price and a major share of the profit (14.48%) goes to the local assembly traders. The high transportation cost, lack of storage and preservation facilities are some of the major problems in marketing of MPTS products.

Methodology:

Mango and jackfruit grow in abundance throughout the country yet they grow more significantly in some particular an because of favourable climatic and edaphic factors. Production boom of mango is genera found in Rajshahi and Chapai Nawabg districts, whereas jackfruit flourishes in middle part of the country as well as in hilly areas of the east. We selected the study areas under the northern districts of Dinajpur and Chapai Nawabganj. In the middle of the country we selected the study a under Narshindi district while under the southeast part we selected them under Rangamati district as it has a great reputation of jackfruit cultivation. The selected sites, more or less, represent the mango and jackfruit growing areas the country. We selected above four districts purposive sampling method since MPTS like jackfruit and mango show profuse growing tendency in these areas. And consequently their marketing activities are mostly revolved around d confined in those areas. In the seconc stage stratified random sampling was done in each of these areas. As production of MPTS products is a function of land holding capacity of the growers, they were stratified into landless (0-0.20 ha), marginal (0.21-0.50 ha), small (0.51-1.00 ha), medium (1.01 - 2.00 ha) and large (over 2.00 ha). Within each stratum sample units were taken randomly. We conducted field work for about 3-4 months during early part of 1992. Data gathering involved various techniques ranging from observation, simple survey, questionnaires, scheduled and unscheduled personal interviews with the growers and people concerned in all the sites. We obtained data on income generation from MPTS, their selling methods, mode of transportation, selling price, consumption and selling ratio. We conducted simple survey to gather data by observations and interviews relating to the present socio-enonomic, demographic and occupational status of the growers. We collected data on farm size and their impact on production. We also collected data on marketing channels, methods and storage of produces.

Achievement/Findings:

The success of MPTS growing largely depends on the well defined marketing and distribution of the produces. These obviously need government and other institutional initiatives for promotion of such activities.
