Combining Ability of A, B, R & Hybrids for T.aman Season 2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty hybrids were produced using six CMS lines viz., BRRI 9A, BRRI10A, II32A, D.ShanA, WanA, GuiA and five restorers viz., BRRI 12R, BRRI 13R, BRRI 14R, New R₄_, New R₆ following line x tester mating design to find out the best combination (s) in respect of their combining ability effects among the parents and hybrids at BRRI, Gazipur, Bangladesh from June2009 to November 2009. Data were recorded from yield and yield contributing agronomic characters each entry through out the replications and mean values were subjected to line x tester analysis. The genotypes were found highly significant for all the traits which indicated that the treatments used in this study were significantly varied from each other. After the partitioning of mean sums of squares (MSS) of the treatments into parent, cross and parent vs cross. Among the 30 crosses the combination Gui A / BRRI12R produced the highest grain yield per plant (18.02 g) followed by GuiA/NewR4 (17.92 g) and GuiA/BRRI13R (17.52 g) which were showed average over parents and checks. The highest yield/plant was found in BRRI 9A/BRRI12R (21.98 gm) where parents BRRI9B (19.44gm) and BRRI12R (16.19gm) respectively and BRRI dhan28 was 14.62 gm with same growth duration. These crosses could be used for next year yield trial.

Objectives:

To select best combiner (s) in respect of grain yield and yield components.

Methodology:

A line (BRRI 9A, BRRI10A, II32A, D.ShanA, WanA, GuiA) R line (BRRI 12R, BRRI 13R, BRRI 14R, New R₄_, New R₆). Five (5) R lines were crossed with six testers (A line) to generate 30 rice hybrids during T. Aman 2009. All the parents and their 30 hybrids and three checks were raised in the randomized complete block design with three replications during T.Aman season 2009. Twenty one days old seedlings were transplanted in 2m² plot sized using single seedling per hill at a spacing of 20 cm x 15 cm. Fertilizers were applied @ of 150:100:70:60:10 kg/ha Urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and ZnSO₄ respectively.
