Marketing Status of Fresh Water Snail in Khulna District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Khulna district for six months (June to November 2006) to know the marketing status of fresh water apple snail, Pila globosa. Data was collected mainly from snail harvesters, traders, breakers and its users. Snail marketing channel included collectors, small trader, large trader, wholesalers, gher farmers, poultry and shrimp feed industries. The snail meat was used as shrimp and duck feed and shell was used to produce lime and snail lime is used in fish farming gher, the crush of snail shell is used in poultry and shrimp feed industry. Ten years ago each harvester earned about 135 taka/day by selling. But at present, harvester earned about 70 taka/day. The price of snail has been increasing year after year due to decrease of its abundance. It is suggested that as apple snail has great importance to keep the aquatic environment clean through filtration. Snail fishery is now under threatened condition due to over exploitation. It is necessary to save this fishery for balancing the natural environment. If government and nongovernment organization can to create export market of apple snail as human food, then it could be a culturable item in Bangladesh. Thus snail fishery could be a livelihood option for the poor fishers.

Objectives:

1. To know the marketing channel of apple snail and to focus the livelihood statuses who are completely or partially involved in snail harvesting, trading and breaking activities.

Methodology:

Study area: Three different upazilla of Khulna district namely Dumuria, Koyra and Batiaghata were selected for the present study. Research design: The total surveyed Khulna district was divided into different Upazilla and its adjacent areas like upazilla such as Dumuria, Koyra, Dacope, Batiaghata etc. Comparisons of snail marketing channel of the study area were observed. Stakeholders of the marketing channel were identified and respondents of each stake during the questionnaire survey were selected randomly. Data collection: Primary data were collected by personal interview method and focus group discussion. Four types of people were selected for interview such as people who are involved with harvesting, snail trading, snail breaking and using snail meat in their farms. Secondary information was collected from published and unpublished reports.

Achievement/Findings:

Snail is called the natural filter. Snail serves as a catalyst in keeping balance with aquatic weeds, fishes and soil of the wetlands. As a result, this animal should be kept alive and to prevent over exploitation in keeping the balance of environment. The marketing system was developed depending on the using pattern of snail meat. Every year a considerable portion of meat were spoiling due to there was no meat market in domestic and international market. Snail culture will open a new area for food production and foreign currency. We hope that the fresh water snail (Pila globosa) will be commercially cultured in our country because, the production of aquaculture in our country can be increased manifolds from only fish culturing to shrimps, crabs, molluscs, oyster etc. We should take proper management plan to protect the destructive collection of apple snail.
