Germination and Seedling Growth of Jali-bet (calamus Tenuis Roxb.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The paper presents the seed germination and seedling growth of jali-bet (Calamus tenuis Roxb.) based on studies at Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong. Germination percentages were 70 for whole fruit, 10 for seed with pulp, and 86.66 for clean seeds. Survival was 95.6% in the field when one year old seedlings raised in polybags were planted. In 18 months after planting the seedlings attained a height of 109.78 em with 3.34 number of culms per plant. Clean seeds for nursery raising, and one year old seedlings for out planting were found suitable for successful plantations.

Objectives:

To observe the seed germination and seedling growth of C. tenuis at Bangladesh Forest Research Institute (BFRI) campus, Chitta gong.

Methodology:

We used locally collected ripen fruits during June to test the germination, and the trial consisted of three treatments: i) Whole fruit (seed+sarcotesta+scale), (ii) Seed with pulp (seed+sarcotesta without), (iii) Clean seed (seed without sarcotesta and scale). For obtaining clean seeds, the scale and pulp were removed by hand. Weight of fruit seeds was also measured. One kg contained 550 fruits and 4500-5000 clean seeds. These fruits/seeds were sown in the germination trays filled with sandy soil and cowdung at a proportion of 3:1. The experiment was laid out Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. In each replication 20 seeds were sown. Thus a total of 180 seeds were used for germination trial. The trays were kept in nursery shade. Regular watering was made. Data on ruination were collected at five days interval the completion of germination. For studying seedling growth in the nurse observations were made for two years follow germination. For this purpose, clean seeds sown in nursery beds and afterwards transplanted to polybags (10cmx15cm). The polybags placed in direct sun light when the seedlings were about two months old. Seedling growth in the field was also served. In the beginning of monsoon i. e. in July, 1000 seedlings raised in polybags were out plan at 3mx3m spacing at the foot hills within BFRI campus, Chittagong. The slope of the planting was moderate. It was moderately well-drained well-drained and partially shaded. The soil was sandy-clay-loam and acidic, pH varying between 5.8 and 6.0. Moisture stress was less than 90 days Nutrients status was poor to moderately fertile and the organic matter was 1.0 to 1.2%. Weeding, fertilizing or watering was not made after planting. All the seedlings received homogenous treatments. Data on the heights of tallest culms and number of culms per plant were recorded at six months and 18 months after planting. Fifty planted randomly selected locations were measured. Seedling survival at various plots was also recorded.
