An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research lnstitute Farm, Gazipur and at farmers field in Chuadanga during Kharif-ll season 2002 (June to November) to determine the effect of different doses of N fertilizer on growth and yield of direct-seeded aman rice (DSR) and to compare N use efficiency of DSR in bed with the conventional method. Bed planting with 0. 60, 8o. 100. and 120 kg N ha-1 and the conventional method with 0 and 100 kg N ha-1 were tested. Yield increase in bed planting with 80 and 100 kg N ha-1 over 100 kg N ha-1 in the conventional method was 6-8%, which increased the grain number panicle-1 and fertility. Weed infestation was less in bed planting. Partial factor productivity was higher in bed planting (52.40-55.10 kg grain kg-1 N) than the conventional method (49.00-5210 kg grain kg-1 N) with the same N rate (100 kg h-1). Likewise, agronomic efficiency was higher in bed planting (15.60-20.10 kg grain increased kg-1 N) than conventional method (12.60-1710 kg grain increased kg-1 N). Bed planting saved 20-40% N fertilizer without losing yield.

To determine the effect of different doses of N fertilizer on the growth and yield of direct-seeded Aman rice and to compare N use efficiency of direct-seeded Aman rice in bed with the conventional method.

The experiment was conducted at the BRRl experimental farm, Gazipur during Khiarif-ll season 2002 (June to November) and repeated simultaneously at farmer's field in Chuadanga. The soil of the experimental plot at Gazipur was clay loam with soil pH 6.49 and that at Chuadanga was silty loam with soil pH 7.94. Bed planting with 0, 60, 80, 100, and 120 kg N ha-1 and the conventional method with 0 and 100 kg N ha-1 were tested. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 14m2 (4 m x 3.5 m) and 35 m2 (7m x 4m) at Gazipur and Chuadanga, respectively. Seed of BRRI dhan30 at the rate of 60 kg ha-1 was used in both the locations. For rice, no new beds were made. Raised bed and furrows were made manually for previous wheat. Seventy-centimeter width raised beds were made. The heights of beds were 15 cm. After harvesting of wheat the land was remained fallow in Kharif-l season in both the sites. A huge number of weeds grew on fallow lands. So a pre-sowing herbicide Glycel (41% Glyphosate) at the rate or 3.7 liter ha-1 was applied on 8 June in Gazipur and 15 June at Chuadanga. The beds prepared for wheat kept intact for rice for both the locations. Therefore, rice on bed was grown under zero tillage conditions. The conventional tillage plots were prepared by puddling. Phosphorus, K, Sand Zn were applied at the rates of 20, 35. 10 and 4 kg ha-1, respectively. The N rates were according to the treatments mentioned earlier. Whole of P. K, Sand Zn were applied at the time of final land preparation as basal dose in the plots with conventional treatment. In the plots with bed planting treatments, it was applied before sowing. Different N treatments were applied in four equal splits. One-forth of N fertilizer was applied as basal before sowing and the remaining splits were topdressed at 20. 45 and 70 days after sowing. For the treatments with bed planting, all the fertilizers were applied on top of beds.

Pre-germinated rice seed was sown in rows in both the bed and conventional methods. For the beds, seed was sown in two rows, 20 cm apart, and for the conventional method, row-to-row distance was 20 cm. In the rows, seed was sown continuously. In Gazipur, seed was sown on 26 June 2002 while in Chuadanga, seed was sown on 30 June 2002. Other recommended crop management practices were followed. Weed population and dry biomass weight of weed were recorded at the time of weeding from a sample area of 0.25 m2. In Gazipur, rice was harvested on 2-8 November and in Chuadanga, it was harvested on 5-12 November. Grain yield, yield components and other growth parameter data were collected at maturity.

The direct-seeded rice in bed planting with 80 and 100 kg N ha-1 gave significantly higher yield than the conventional method with 100 kg N ha-1 and 20-40% N could be saved without losing yield due to higher N use efficiency in the bed planting than the conventional method.
