Determination of Suitable Row Ratio and Spacing for Increasing Seed Yield in Hybrid Rice Seed Production During Boro 2009-2010

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Determination of row ratio and spacing is very important for hybrid rice seed production. Specific row ratio and spacing is required for a particular hybrid combination. Row ratio and spacing depends on floral characters of CMS lines, pollen load of restorer lines and tillering ability of both the lines. Highest seed yield was found from 2:10 row ratio with 15 cm x 15 cm planting spacing (2.31 t/ha). Row ratio 2:8 showed highest out crossing rate with 15 cm x 15 cm spacing followed by row ratio 2:8 with 20 cm x 15 cm spacing.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum row ratio and spacing for hybrid rice seed production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted using BRRI11A line along with its restorer (BRRI15R). Restorer was sown in two different dates at seven days interval and CMS lines was sown in the two days later of the middle of its restorer line. Thirty days old seedling were transplanted at a spacing of 15 cm x 15 cm , 20 cm x 15 cm and 20 cm x 20 cm with 2:8,2:10,2:12 and 2:14 row ratio of R and A line using RCBD factorial design with three replications. Fertilizers @ 270: 130:120:70:10 kg/ha urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and ZnSO₄ were applied. Intercultural operations, rouging, GA₃ application and supplementary pollination were performed when required.
