Evaluation of the comparative efficiency of separated tiller vs. bolon practice in T-Aman rice is necessary for yield recovery. An experiment was conducted at Mohendronagar union of Sadar upazila of Lalmanirhat district during the period from July to November 2002 with even treatments namely (undisturbed tiller (control), 1 tiller separation hill-1, 2 tillers separation hill-1, 3 tillers separation hill-1, separated tiller transplantation to new field, double transplanting (Bolon) and older fresh seedling). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The result showed that the tiller separation and separated tiller transplantation significantly (P≤0.05) influenced on growth and yield attributes. The highest number of effective tillers m-2 (266.00) and thousand grains weight (26.33 g) were found in 3-tillers separation hill-1 while the highest number of spike lets (180.33) panicle-1, number of filled grains (122.33) panicle-1 and the number of unfilled grains (58.00) panicle-1 were observed in separated tiller transplantation . The highest grain yield (5.47 t ha-1) was obtained in disturbed crop (1-tiller separation hill-1) and the lowest (3.56 t ha-1) was observed in older fresh seedling, while no significant variation was observed between disturbed and undisturbed crops, and between traditional practices and separated tiller transplantation. So, the separated tiller transplantation may be followed in flood-damaged field of Transplant Aman rice to recover the yield loss.

1. To investigate the performance of separated tillers on the growth and yield of transplant aman rice; 2. To find out the effect of tiller separation on the growth and yield of mother plants; 3. To compare the performance of different rates of tiller separation hill-1 and double transplanting on growth and yield of transplant aman rice.

The experiment was conducted at Mohendronagar union of Sadar upazila of Lalmanirhat district during the period from July to November 2002. The soil of the experimental site belongs to the Tista Meander Flood plain Agro–ecological zone (AEZ-3). The land of Mohendronagar experiment site was medium low with sandy loam texture. Organic matter content, PH, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable potassium, available Zink, available boron, available sulfur of soil were 1.71%, 5.9, 0.06%, 20 mg/g, 0.18 meq/100g soil, 0.48 mg/g , 0.28 mg/g and 15.7 mg/g respectively. Seven treatments were included in the experiment. These were as follows: i. T0 = Undisturbed tiller (normal time of planting; 30 days old seedling) ii. T1 = 1-tiller separation hill-1 (30 days after transplanting) iii. T2 = 2-tiller separation hill-1 (30 days after transplanting) iv. T3 = 3-tiller separation hill-1 (30 days after transplanting) v. T4 = Transplantation with separated tillers to new field vi. T5 = Double transplanting (Farmers practice) vii. T6 = Transplantation with old seedling (60 days old). The crop tested in this experiment was T-Aman rice and variety used was BR-11. The agro-climatic condition of daily maximum, minimum and average temperatures, relative humidity, monthly total rainfall and sunshine hours received at the experimental station during the study period have been recorded. Healthy seeds of BR11 stored in organic cocoon were collected from RDRS Bangladesh. Seeds were sprouted by immersing them in water buckets for 24 hours. These were then taken out from water and kept in cloth bags. The seeds started sprouting after 48 hours of incubation and were sown after 72 hours. Seeding nurseries were prepared by puddling the soil. The sprouted seeds were sown in well prepared nursery bed. Seeds of BR 11 were sown on 1st June 2002, for July planting. The land was prepared by ploughing and cross ploughing with a country ploug h followed by laddering. The weeds and stubbles were removed from the field. Then the field was made ready for transplanting rice seedlings. The lay out of the experimental field was made according to the design adopted. Finally, the individual plots were prepared before transplantation. The land was fertilized with 80kg of Urea, 15 kg of TSP, 40kg of MP, 10kg of Gypsum and 5kg of Zinc shulphate ha-1 respectively. The amount of each kind of fertilizers for unit plot was calculated and the entire amount of TSP, MP, Gypsum and Zinc shulphate was applied at the time of final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal splits on 15, 30 and 55 days after transplanting (DAT). Thirty day old seedlings were uprooted carefully from the nursery bed and were transplanted on 1stJuly, 2002 with two seedlings hill-1. The row to row distance was 25 cm and from hill to hill was 20 cm. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Tillers were separated at 30 DAT keeping 1, 2 and 3-tiller separation hill-1 from the mother plants. Secondary and tertiary tillers were separated by hand because they produced more effective tillers than primary ones. Separated tillers were mixed and transplanted to new field with 2 tillers hill-1. Besides for double transplanting, 60 days old fresh seedlings were transplanted. Bolon is a local term used by the farmers of northern part of Bangladesh in low land and flood prone area. It is nothing but a double transplanting method practiced by the farmers. Generally farmers prepare seedlings in wetbed, uprooted at 30 DAS and transplanted with more seedlings (10-12 seedlings/hill), using closer spacing (10 cm x 8 cm). Afterwards, this hill is uprooted again at 25 DAT in low land with 2-3 seedlings/hill using normal spacing (25 cm x 20 cm). Data on Plant height, Total number of tillers/hill, No. of effective tillers/m2, No. of non effective tillers/m2, Panicle length, No. of spikelets/panicle, No. of filled grains/panicle, No. of unfilled grains/panicle, Weight of 1000 grains, Grain yield (t/ha) were taken and data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance technique and mean differences were adjusted by the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) and Least Significant difference (LSD) test, as and when necessary.
