Effect of Insecticides and Organic Oil Spray on Incidence and Spread of Tylcv of Tomato Under Field Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In order to evaluate the effect of insecticides and organic oil on the incidence and spread of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) an experiment was conducted in the research field of Plant Pathology Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University during winter 2006-07 cropping season. Three different insecticides namely Admire (0.1%), Cymbush (0.1%) and Nymbicidine (0.1%) and an organic oil namely soybean oil (1.0%) were evaluated. The study revealed that all the spray materials significantly (p = 0.05) reduced the incidence of TYLCV over untreated control in different growth stages of plants though the insecticide Admire was found to be most effective which was followed by Soybean oil, Cymbush and Nymbicidin. Objectives:

1. To find out the effect of insecticides and organic oil spray on the incidence of TYLCV as well as its spread on field.

Methodology:

The research program was conducted at the Research Farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur during November 2006 to March 2007. Popular tomato variety Manik (BARI Tomato-1) was used in the experiment. Three different insecticides namely Admire (0.1%), Cymbush (0.1%), Nimbicidin (0.1%) and Organic oil namely soybean oil (1%) were evaluated against the incidence of TYLCV. The spraying was applied at 30 days old seedlings which was continued up to flowering stage of tomato plants in the field with 10 days interval. TYLCV was identified mainly through visual observation of typical symptoms as described by Green and Kalloo (1994) and Sinistera et al. (2000). Whiteflies were caught by placing yellow traps in the field as suggested by Moericke (1957) from the date of seedling transplantation.

Achievement/Findings:

The results suggested that all the chemicals significantly (P=0.05) reduced the incidence of TYLCV over Control in both flowering and flowering to harvesting stage. In both the cases the lowest incidence of TYLCV was found in Admire treated plants and the highest in Control. The total incidence of the virus was recorded as the highest (33.75%) in Control and the lowest (12.50%) in Admire treated plants. However among the chemicals Admire performed better which was followed by Soybean oil, Cymbush and Nimbicidin. Admire differed significantly with the rest while Cymbush and Soybean oil were statistically identical in total TYLCV incidence on tomato. The results also demonstrated that the TYLCV spread in tomato field was increased with the increase of whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) population which is directly correlated with the prevailing temperature and relative humidity over there in that time.
