Effect of Side Dressing of Furadan 5g and Miral 3g Against Root-knot (meloidogyne Javanica) of Brinjal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in the Department of Plant Pathology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur where Furadan 5G and Miral 3G were tested as side dressing of brinjal plants against root-knot (Meloidogyne javanica). The two chemicals in higher concentrations (60 mg and 88 mg per plant, respectively) either alone or in combination gave superior response in plant growth characters with corresponding lower number of galls, adult females and egg masses. In most of the cases of plant growth and nemic population, Furadan 5G performed superior to Miral 3G as well as an interesting findings of the study as a promising nematicidal role of Miral 3G adhering with conventional nematicide Furadan 5G.

Objectives:

1. To see the effect of Furadan 5G and Miral 3G either alone or in combination on the incidence of root-knot disease of brinjal caused by Meloidogyne javanica.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted both in the laboratory and net house of Plant Pathology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University, Dinajpur during 16 November, 2007 to 15 May, 2008. Pot soil was prepared by mixing sandy loam soil, sand and well decomposed cowdung (ratios 2:2:1). The mixed soil was sterilized and placed in the pots. Healthy, mature and disease free brinjal seeds were taken after surface sterilization. Rising of seedlings was done in two earthen pots treated as seed beds. Healthy and uniform sizes of seedlings of 30 days were uprooted with special care. After transplanting the seedlings, adequate moisture was ensured with the supply of water for consecutive seven days. Altogether, nine treatments including control having four replications were used. Different concentrations of Furadan 5G and Miral 3G were used singly and/or in combination as side dressing as treatments which were T₁ = control, T₂ = 60 mg Furadan, T₃ = 88 mg Miral 3G, T₄ = 60 mg Furadan 5G + 44 mg Miral 3G, T₅ = 30 mg Furadan 5G + 88 mg Miral 3G, T₆ = 30 mg Furadan 5G + 44 mg Miral 3G, T₇ = 30 mg Furadan 5G + 22 mg Miral 3G, T₈ = 15 mg Furadan 5G + 44 mg Miral 3G, T₉ = 15 mg Furadan 5G + 22 mg Miral 3G. Eggmasses of root-knot nematode were collected from previously inoculated brinjal plant and Inoculation was done after 10 days of transplantation with eight eggmasses by placing in either side of the plant (1 cm and 5 cm away for egg mass and side dressing, respectively). After 60 and 90 days of inoculation, plants were uprooted and length of shoot and root, fresh weight of shoot and root were measured and counting of galls. Then galls were crushed one after another to count the adult males or females, L₂, L₃ and L₄ stage (s) in 10 galls per treatment. The experiments were conducted following Completely Randomized and Randomized Complete Block Design for lab. and field experiment, respectively. Each treatment was replicated four times and all data were analyzed following standard procedures for analysis of variance. Differences between means were evaluated for significant level following a modified Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
