An experiment was conducted at different areas viz. Kalay, Vadsha and Panchbibi under Joypur hat Sugarmill to find out the potential yield of sugarcane by paired row system sugarcane with wide spacing of intercrop during 2002-2003. Following treatments were used as T1 (Paired row cane Isd 2/54 + Arroid ), T2 (Paired row cane Isd 16 + Arroid), T3 (Paired row cane Isd 22 + Arroid) and T4 (Paired row cane Isd 28 + Arroid) and T5 (Paired row cane Isd 29 + Arroid). The highest sugarcane yield (90.80 t ha-1) was obtained from T5 followed by T3 (87.7 tha-1) from Panchbibi area. The highest yield (4.2 t ha-1) of first intercrop was found from T3 at Panchbibi among three areas. T4 (Paired row cane Isd 28 + Arroid) produced the highest tillers (210.0 x 10 3 ha-1) at Vadsha and millable cane (106.7 x 10 3 ha-1) at Panchbibi. The maximum equivalent cane yield (18.8 t ha-1) from T3 and total adjusted cane yield (109.2 t ha-1) were recorded from T5 at Panchbibi.

1. To select area wise appropriate sugarcane variety and find out the performance of intercrop with paired row system of sugarcane in different areas.

The experimental sides represent Tista Meander Flood Plain under Agro-ecological zone-3 with high land of loamy soil having pH 5.4-6.5. After final land preparation sugarcane setts were planted ( November, 2002) in trench in paired row system of 60 cm apart while wide space between two paired rows of cane 140 cm. The wide space (140 cm) was used for growing intercrop. Individual plot size was 8m x 8m and the treatments were as follows: T1: Paired row cane Isd 2/54 + Arroid T2: Paired row cane Isd 16 + Arroid T3: Paired row cane Isd 22 + Arroid T4: Paired row cane Isd 28 + Arroid T5: Paired row cane Isd 29 + Arroid The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Seeds of first intercrop were planted in the vacant spaces of paired rows cane at the same time of sugarcane. Fertilizers for sugarcane were @ 325, 250, 260, 165 and 25 kg ha-1 for Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate respectively. Full amount of TSP, Gypsum, Zinc sulphate, one third (1/3rd) Urea and MOP were applied as basal doze in the trenches and mixed thoroughly with the soil. Rest amount of Urea and MOP were top dressed in two equal splits at 120 Days After Plantation (DAP) and 180 DAP (tillering completion stage). Besides, Urea 110 kg ha-1, TSP 100 kg ha-1, MOP 85 kg ha-1 and Gypsum 25 kg ha-1 were applied for Arroid. For intercrop half of Urea and MOP, full amounts of TSP and Gypsum were applied as basal dozes. Remaining half of Urea and MOP were top dressed after 45 DAP. Before setts placement in the trenches, setts were treated by Bavistin @ 1g/L at 30 minutes. Insect pests were controlled applying Furadan 5G @ 40 kg ha-1 in three splits in December, March and May. During setts placement Regent 3 GR @ 33 kg ha-1 was used in the trenches of sugarcane. Cultural management practices were done for sugarcane and intercrop as when necessary. Tiller of sugarcane was counted at 120 DAP, as well as millable cane and also cane yield were recorded at harvest. The yield of Ist intercrops were recorded during harvest and converted into cane yield on the basis of sell price. Statistical analysis on yield and yield contributing parameters for sugarcane and intercrops were done following the standard procedure.
