A Comparative Study of System of Rice Intensification and Traditional Planting Methods on Yield and Yield Attributes of BRRI Dhan28

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in different northern districts viz. kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha during 2006-07 cropping season under Agro-ecological zone-2 (Active Tista Floodplain) of Bangladesh. An attempted was made in boro season with view to know the effectiveness of System of Rice Intensification (SRI) planting method over the traditional planting method on growth and yield of boro rice (BRRI dhan28). The highest number of effective tillers hill^-1 (29.00 nos), non-effective tillers hill^-1 (10.50nos) and 1000 grain weight (27 g) were obtained from SRI planting method in Gaibandha. On the other hand, the lowest numbers of effective tillers hill^-1 (9.00 nos), 1000- grain weight (19.00g) were produced at Lalmonirhat and non-effective tillers^-1 (6.90 nos) at Gaibandha from traditional planting method. Number of seedlings hill^-1 i.e. planting methods also had shown significant effect on the yield parameters. It was found that the highest number of grains panicle^-1 (120.89 nos) at Lalmonirhat from SRI and the lowest number of grains panicle^-1 (92.30 nos) at Gaibandha from traditional planting method. The highest grain yield (7.70 t ha^-1) was obtained from SRI and the lowest grain yield (5.10 t ha^-1) from traditional planting method in Kurigram. Results showed that SRI planting method performed superior over the traditional method relating yield of transplanted boro rice (BRRI dhan28).

Objectives:

1. To find out the performance of SRI method compared with traditional planting method on growth and yield of boro rice (BRRI dhan28).

Methodology:

The study was conducted in a farmer’s field at different locations viz. Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Kurigram during 2006-07 cropping seasons. The site represents Tista Active Floodplain under Agro-ecological zone-2. The experimental fields were a well drained medium high land. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with 10 replications arranged in field plots. The unit plot size was 10 m2 (4.0 m x 2.5 m). The distances between each two main plots were 1 m. Seeds of BRRI dhan 28 were collected from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). Healthy seeds were immersed in water in bucked for 24 hours. Then seeds were taken out of water and kept thickly in gunny bags for sprouting. Sprouted seeds were sown in broad cast method in the well prepared wet nursery bed. The land was prepared in mid December and fertilizers @ 120, 135, 65, 20 and 4kg ha^-1 as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively were applied as per recommendation. The entire amounts of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate were incorporated into the soil at final land preparation. In SRI and traditional planting methods, 12-14 days and 35-40 days old seedlings were uprooted from the seedling bed carefully and transplanted in the fields. Seedlings were transplanted in the main field with the number of seedlings hill^-1 as specified in the treatment. The spacing was maintained at 25 cm x 25 cm in SRI and 15 cm x 15 cm in traditional planting methods between the rows and hills, respectively. Within one week of transplantation, dead seedlings were replaced by transplanting new healthy seedlings from the same source and were transplanted in the main field carefully. Irrigation water was applied keeping a standing water about 2-3 cm during the entire growing period. Dimecron 100 EC @ 1.5 liters ha^-1 was applied two times (30 and 50 DAT) as a protective measure against insect-pests for the entire growing period. Ten hills from each plot were selected randomly for collecting data. The panicles which had at least on grain were considered as effective tillers and no grain considered as non-effective tillers. Presence of any food material in the spikelet was considered as grain and total number of grains present on each panicle was counted. One thousand clean, dried grains were counted from the grain stock and weighed by using an electrical balance and expressed in (g) after adjusting the seed moisture content at 14% level. Grain and green straw yield obtained from each unit plot were sun dried and weighed carefully. The dry weight of grain of ten sample plant was added to the respective unit plot yield to record the final grain yield plot^-1. The grain yield was finally converted to t ha^-1. The data were compiled and tabulated in proper form and were subjected to statistical analysis. The mean differences among the treatments were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.
