Shade Effect on the Yield and Quality of Pineapple in a Jackfruit- Pineapple Agroforestry System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted on the existing farmers' jackfruit-pineapple agroforestry orchards in an area of Madhupur tract of Bangladesh to determine the shade effects on the growth, yield and quality of pineapple. Under jackfruit-pineapple combination, the mean season light intensity showed strong positive correlation with number of leaves per plant (r = 0.62), fruit yield (r = 0.81) and total sugar content (r = 0.52) of fruits. But when the full range of light, as occurred in the sole pineapple plots, were included in the analysis, the mean season light intensity showed reverse phenomena - a strong negative correlation with the number of leaves per plant (r = - 0.66) and only a weak positive correlation with the yield (r = 0.13) and total sugar content of fruits (r = 0.29). The estimates made by using the models developed through regression analysis showed that the yield of pineapple might be maximized (64 t/ha) at a mean season light intensity of 610 µmol/m²/s or 55% of open light condition. Such a light condition occurred in jackfruit orchards tested with an estimated crown cover of 9803 m²/ha.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of jackfruit shade on pineapple production and to develop a mathematical model to estimate light availability and pineapple yield under jackfruit orchards.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the existing farmers' jackfruit-pineapple agroforestry gardens in the villages of Borochala, Chapat, Raonyte and Rupbuiar Tak of Kapasia Upazila in the district of Gazipur during April-October, 1998. Three jackfruit- pineapple gardens and three sole orchards of pineapple were selected for the present study. Six temporary plots 2 m x 2 m each, were set in each of the three agroforestry plots, maintaining a plot to plot distance of 4 m. Two temporary plots of the same size were also set-up in each of the three sole pineapple orchards. Light intensity in each plot was measured with a PAR Ceptometer in mid-April, mid-May, mid-July and mid- October at around noontime (11 :00 a.m. to 01:00 p.m.) to estimate the mean season light intensity. From each plot, five pineapple plants were selected randomly to record data on plant growth and yield parameters. Three pineapple fruits were taken from each plot to determine the chemical properties of pineapple juice. Eighteen jackfruit orchards of different age groups <5, 8-l2, 20-22, >30 years) were selected to gather necessary data to estimate the relationship between light intensity under jackfruit orchards and the age and density of trees. From each orchard, a 25 m x 25 m area was measured out. The selected area of each orchard was further sub-divided into 25 blocks (5 m x 5 m each). The crown diameter of each tree was measured. The average noontime light intensity under each garden was also measured with a PAR Ceptometer. Correlation analysis was done to determine the relationship between the mean season light intensity and the growth, yield and quality parameters of pineapple. The crown cover of jackfruit orchards of different age density combinations and the light and availability underneath them were modeled through regression analysis.

Achievement/Findings:

Based on the present study, it is concluded that in jackfruit-pineapple association, the yield and quality (total sugar) of pineapple increased with the increase of light intensity up to certain limit. Under open or near-open conditions, plant height, number of leaves per plant, pH and yield of pineapple declined. Therefore, farmers should be encouraged to adopt the jackfruit-pineapple agroforestry system rather than growing pineapple as a sole crop.
