Effect of Presowing Seed Treatment with Rhizobium Strains and Biofertilizers for Controlling Foot and Root Rot Disease of Bushbean Caused by Fusarium Poae

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted in a glasshouse to find out the effect of pre-sowing seed treatment with six Rhizobium strains and three biofertilizers on foot and root rot (Fusarium poae) disease and yield of bushbean (Phaseolus vulgaris) variety BARI bushbean I. The treatments caused reduction in incidence of the disease and increased in plant growth, yield and yield contributing characters significantly over control. Rhizobium strains, BINAR P36 and BINAR P6 and BINA biofertilizer gave maximum reduction of seed rot, foot and root rot, and discoloured seeds and increased germination, plant stand, shoot and root length/plant, seedling vigour, number and weight of green pods/plant, yield of seeds/plant. Among the materials Rhizobium strain BINAR P36 showed best performance. So, it may be selected for testing under field conditions.

Objectives:

To study the effect of seed treatment with Rhizobium strains and biofertilizers on the incidence of foot and root rot of bushbean, a common leguminous crop throughout the world.

Methodology:

Six Rhizobium strains namely BADR 975, BADR 424, BARIR 7029, BARIR 892, BINAR P6 and BINAR P36 and three biofertilizers (BAD biofertilizer, BARI biofertilizer and BINA biofertilizer) were tested against foot and root rot of bush bean. Seeds were treated with Rhizobium strains and biofertilizers. For uniform coating, seeds were deeped in yeast manitol broth containing Rhizobium strains 10⁹ cells/ml for 15 minutes. In ease of biofertilizers, seeds were initially moistened with molasses at the rate of 50 g/ kg of seeds. Then the seeds were thoroughly mixed with biofertilizer @ SO/kg of seed, where each biofertilizer contained 10⁸ Rhizobium cells/mg. The inoculant- coated seeds were dried under shade. Seeds under control treatment were not treated with any of the material. The experiment was carried out in a glasshouse of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAD), Mymensingh during 2002-2003. The bushbean variety used was BARI Bush bean-l. Inoculum of F. poae was prepared following a standard method . Well dried cowdung was mixed thoroughly with soil (1 :2). The dried soil was sterilized with 1.0% formalin at the rate 20 ml per 4 kg of soil . Sterilized soil was poured into earthen pots at 4 kg/pol. For inoculation, the oat culture of F. poae was mixed with pot soil ate rate of 0.1 % (w/w) before seed sowing . The inoculum was applied only LIp to a depth of 6 cm in the pot soil at 2 g/pot. The treated as well as nontreated seeds were sown in inoculated pot soil. After germination, the plants were allowed to grow providing necessary nutrients and water. Other intercultural operations were done as and when required. Data on germination, incidence of seed rot, foot and root rot, germination, plant stand, length of shoot and root, seedling vigour, number of nodules/plant, length and breadth of green pods, number and weight of green pods per plant, seed yield/plant and incidence of disco loured seeds were recorded. Achievement/Findings:

Findings of the present investigation indicate that Rhizobium strain BINAR P 36 and BINA biofertilizer gave maximum reduction in incidence of seed rot, foot and root rot diseases and increase in plant growth and seed yield of bushbean. So the three materials may be tested under field conditions against the disease of the crop.
